Fuel Pump Driver Module Disabled or Offline
on 2000 Ford Excursion 5.4L V8 Triton · 4WD
What this code means
The PCM has lost communication with the Fuel Pump Driver Module (FPDM). The FPDM controls fuel pump speed via pulse-width modulation. When offline, the fuel pump may not operate, causing no-start or stalling conditions. This is a common issue on late 1990s to 2011 Ford vehicles including F-150, Mustang, and Crown Victoria.
Symptoms
- Engine cranks but will not start
- Engine stalls while driving
- Intermittent no-start condition
- Check Engine Light
- Loss of power while driving
Common causes
- Faulty or corroded Fuel Pump Driver Module
- Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch tripped
- Wiring chafed on top of transmission pan
- Blown fuse in fuel pump circuit
- Corroded FPDM connector
- Failed fuel pump
Diagnostic steps
- Check if Inertia Fuel Shutoff switch needs reset (located in trunk or behind kick panel)
- Inspect FPDM connector and wiring for corrosion (module often under vehicle, exposed to elements)
- Check FPDM power supply fuse
- Inspect wiring over transmission for chafing
- Test FPDM communication with scan tool
- Check fuel pump operation directly
Repair notes
Reset IFS switch first. Check FPDM connector for corrosion. Replace FPDM if corroded or faulty. Inspect wiring over transmission pan.
