The 2009 CX-9 with the 3.7L V6 is a spacious three-row crossover undermined by catastrophic engine failure issues and transmission cooler leaks that can destroy the automatic transmission. The engine problems alone make this a high-risk used purchase.
Catastrophic Engine Failure (Piston Ring Land Collapse)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (quart every 500-1000 miles), White/blue smoke from exhaust on startup or acceleration, Loss of power and rough idle, Check engine light with misfire codes (P0300-P0307), Metallic knocking sounds from engine bay
Fix: The 3.7L V6 suffers from weak piston ring lands that crack and fail, causing oil consumption and eventual catastrophic failure. Requires complete engine rebuild or replacement. Short block replacement takes 18-24 hours; full rebuild adds another 6-10 hours for machine work.
Estimated cost: $5,500-9,000
Transmission Oil Cooler Failure Leading to Transmission Destruction
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission slipping or delayed engagement, Milky or strawberry-colored transmission fluid (coolant contamination), Overheating transmission temp warnings, Harsh shifting or no movement in gear, Engine coolant level drops without visible leaks
Fix: The internal transmission cooler inside the radiator fails, allowing coolant and ATF to mix. Coolant destroys transmission internals rapidly. Requires transmission rebuild or replacement, new radiator, complete fluid system flush, and all cooler lines. Transmission R&R is 8-12 hours; add rebuild time if internals are damaged.
Estimated cost: $3,500-6,500
Front Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Separation
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking noise over bumps from front end, Wandering or unstable steering feel, Uneven tire wear on inside edge, Vehicle pulls to one side, Visible play when prying on ball joint with bar
Fix: Ball joints fail prematurely and can separate causing loss of control (NHTSA recall issued but many still fail post-recall). Control arms are not serviceable separately - full arm replacement required both sides. 3-4 hours labor for both sides plus alignment.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Transfer Case Chain Wear and Failure (AWD Models)
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Grinding or whining noise during acceleration, Vibration at highway speeds, AWD warning light illuminated, Clunking when shifting from Park to Drive, Metal shavings in transfer case fluid
Fix: Transfer case chain stretches and wears, eventually breaking and causing internal damage. Requires transfer case removal and rebuild or replacement unit. Labor is 6-9 hours for R&R and rebuild.
Estimated cost: $2,200-3,800
Power Steering Pump Failure and Rack Leaks
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 75,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Whining or groaning noise when turning wheel, Heavy steering effort, especially at low speeds, Power steering fluid leaks under vehicle (rack boot area), Burning smell from leaking fluid on exhaust, Intermittent loss of power assist
Fix: Power steering pump fails and rack develops leaks at the boots and seals. Pump replacement is 2-3 hours; rack replacement adds 4-6 hours and requires alignment. Often both need addressing together.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,400
Rear Liftgate Struts and Latch Mechanism Failure
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Liftgate won't stay open or drops quickly, Liftgate won't latch closed or bounces open, Clicking or grinding noise from latch area, Power liftgate operates intermittently or not at all
Fix: Liftgate struts weaken and latch mechanism wears out. Struts are 0.5 hours for both; latch assembly is 1-2 hours. Power liftgate motor can also fail requiring 2-3 hours replacement.
Estimated cost: $300-900
Owner tips
Check oil consumption religiously every 500 miles - if burning more than 1qt per 1500mi, engine failure is imminent
Inspect transmission fluid color every oil change - any pink/milky appearance means immediate cooler failure
Replace transmission cooler and radiator preventively at 80k miles if original - $800 now vs $5k later
Inspect ball joints annually and replace at first sign of play - not worth the safety risk
Change transfer case fluid every 30k miles with Mazda-spec fluid to extend chain life
Budget $1,000-1,500 annually for deferred maintenance issues on any CX-9 over 80k miles
Avoid unless you find one with documented engine replacement and transmission cooler upgrade - the catastrophic engine failure rate makes this a financial time bomb that's not worth the gamble at any price.

2019-10-31 · EA15001
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2007-2012 CX-7, CX-9, and 2009-2012 Maza6 vehicles. These vehicles had their passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. The recall began December 3, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V356 and 17V012.
