The 2004 Cayenne 3.2L V6 shares its M02.2Y engine with the VW Touareg and suffers catastrophic cylinder bore scoring issues, plus typical Porsche cooling system and transmission mount failures that plague early 955-chassis models.
Cylinder Bore Scoring / Lokasil Cylinder Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1+ quart per 1,000 miles), Cold-start smoke from exhaust (blue-white), Metallic rattling or knocking especially when cold, Low compression on multiple cylinders
Fix: Complete engine rebuild or replacement required. Lokasil coating breaks down on cylinder walls causing catastrophic wear. Independent rebuild with Nikasil re-sleeving takes 40-50 hours; used engine swap 20-25 hours.
Estimated cost: $8,000-15,000
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid puddles under vehicle (red/brown fluid), Low fluid warning on dash, Harsh shifting or slipping when fluid gets low, Visible corrosion on cooler lines at crimped connections
Fix: Replace cooler lines and flush transmission. Lines corrode where they crimp into fittings. Access requires removing belly pans. 3-4 hours labor plus fluid.
Estimated cost: $600-1,200
Transmission Mounts (Front and Rear)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Vibration through chassis at idle in gear, Excessive drivetrain movement visible during acceleration, Transmission appears to sag when inspected on lift
Fix: Replace both mounts. Hydraulic mounts fail and leak fluid. Front mount requires subframe drop on some procedures; rear is easier. 4-6 hours for both.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Coolant Pipe/Flange Leaks
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Coolant smell in cabin or under hood, Coolant loss without visible external leaks, Overheating warnings or temp gauge creeping up, Wet spots on engine valley or behind timing cover
Fix: Plastic coolant flanges and pipes become brittle and crack. Common failure at thermostat housing and crossover pipes. Requires valley pan removal on V6. 6-10 hours depending on location.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,500
Air Suspension Compressor and Line Failures
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Suspension fault message on dash, Vehicle sits low in corners or won't raise, Compressor runs constantly or won't run at all, Hissing sound from suspension when parked
Fix: Compressor wears out; air lines crack at fittings. Compressor replacement 2-3 hours. If converting to coil springs (common), 8-10 hours for full conversion kit.
Symptoms: Transfer case fault warning on dash, Stuck in one drive mode (can't shift 4WD ranges), Grinding or clicking from center of vehicle, 4WD system non-functional
Fix: Actuator motor fails or position sensor goes bad. Motor replacement requires transfer case drain and partial removal. 4-5 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $800-1,500
Front Lower Control Arm Bushings
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking over bumps from front end, Wandering steering or vague on-center feel, Uneven tire wear on inside edges, Visible cracks or separation in rubber bushings
Fix: Bushings tear and separate. Porsche sells full control arms only (no serviceable bushings). Aftermarket offers press-in bushings. 3-4 hours for both sides with alignment.
Estimated cost: $600-1,200
Owner tips
Check oil consumption religiously — 1 quart per 1,000 miles means bore scoring has started; budget for engine replacement
Inspect transmission cooler lines annually for corrosion before they strand you
Replace coolant every 2 years with Porsche-spec G12 — this engine overheats quickly when coolant system fails
Get pre-purchase inspection focusing on compression test and borescope inspection of cylinders
Budget $2,000/year minimum for deferred maintenance surprises
Avoid unless you find documented proof of recent engine rebuild or replacement — the V6 bore scoring issue is a ticking time bomb that makes this generation Cayenne a financially risky purchase under $8,000.

Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (Porsche) is recalling certain 2003-2020 Porsche Macan, Cayenne, Panamera, and Cayman S, 2001-2004 Boxster, Boxster S, 2004 Boxster 50 JAHRE SPYDER 550 vehicles. Please see the recall report for a complete list of all affected models and model years. The caps that cover the low-beam headlight horizontal adjustment screws are missing, which can allow the headlights to be improperly adjusted. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Consequence: Improperly adjusted headlights may not illuminate the road properly, or cause a glare to oncoming drivers, which can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the headlights for sealing caps and install missing caps as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 28, 2022. Owners may contact Porsche's customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche's number for this recall is ANB4.

The bushing that attaches the gear selector lever to the gearbox may degrade over time, causing the bushing to detach. This condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.
Consequence: If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. Owners are instructed to use the parking brake until their vehicle is repaired. The recall began August 9, 2019. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche's number for this recall is AKB1.

CERTAIN PASSENGER CARS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, "OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION." ALL THREE REAR SEAT POSITIONS AND THE FRONT PASSENGER POSITION ARE EQUIPPED WITH SEAT BELT RETRACTORS THAT HAVE A LOCKING FEATURE WHICH CONVERTS THE RETRACTOR FROM AN EMERGENCY LOCKING RETRACTOR (ELR) MODE TO AN AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTOR (ALR) MODE FOR THE PURPOSES OF CHILD RESTRAINT INSTALLATION. THE BELT MAY DEACTIVATE THE ALR MODE WITH CERTAIN CHILD RESTRAINTS.
Consequence: WHEN INVOLVED IN A CRASH, THE CHILD RESTRAINTS MAY NOT BE PROPERLY SECURED INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY INSTALL A CLIP IN EITHER OF THE AFFECTED REAR OUTBOARD SEAT BELTS AND PROVIDE AN OWNER'S MANUAL INSERT. THE CLIPS WILL PREVENT UNWARRANTED CONVERSION FROM ALR TO ELR MODE WITH CHILD SEAT INSTALLATION. THE RECALL BEGAN MAY 17, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT PORSCHE AT 1-800-545-8039.
