Excessive Oil Consumption & Piston Ring Failure (Early B58 Engines)
Occasional · high severityTypical onset: 30,000-80,000 mi
Symptoms: Burning through a quart of oil every 1,000-2,000 miles, Blue smoke on cold start or under hard acceleration, Low oil pressure warning if run too low, Check engine light for misfires in severe cases
Fix: BMW issued a technical service bulletin and extended warranty coverage for some VINs. Requires complete engine teardown, new pistons and rings, often rod bearings while you're in there. 25-35 shop hours if done properly. Some engines got short-block replacements under warranty.
Estimated cost: $8,000-15,000
