The 2015 Ford Focus with automatic transmission (DPS6 dual-clutch) is notorious for one of the worst transmission implementations in modern automotive history, resulting in class-action lawsuits and extended warranties. Manual transmission models avoid this disaster entirely.
DPS6 Dual-Clutch Automatic Transmission Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 20,000-80,000 mi, but can fail earlier or later
Symptoms: Harsh shifting, shuddering, or lurching during acceleration from stop, Hesitation or slipping when pulling into traffic, Overheating warning messages or burnt clutch smell, Complete loss of drive or inability to engage gears
Fix: Clutch pack replacement is common (6-8 hours labor), but many units require full TCM reprogramming, valve body replacement, or complete transmission rebuild/replacement. Ford issued TSBs and extended warranty to 7yr/100k on clutch, but many owners exceed that. Even with repairs, problem often recurs.
Estimated cost: $1,800-4,500 for clutch replacement; $3,500-5,500 for rebuild; $4,000-6,000+ for used/reman unit installed
Transmission Control Module (TCM) Failure/Reprogramming Issues
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 30,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission shifting erratically or not at all, Check engine light with P0700, P0606, or transmission-related codes, Transmission stuck in neutral or limp mode, Electrical burning smell from transmission area
Fix: TCM replacement requires removal of transmission (4-6 hours labor) plus programming. Often done in conjunction with clutch work. Ford issued multiple software updates, but hardware failure still common.
Estimated cost: $800-1,500
Transmission Oil Cooler and Seal Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 50,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid pooling under vehicle, Low fluid warnings or overheating, Wet spots on transmission bell housing, Shifting problems that worsen as fluid level drops
Fix: Input shaft seal and oil cooler connections are weak points. Requires transmission removal or partial drop (4-7 hours depending on access). Often discovered during clutch replacement.
Estimated cost: $600-1,200
Door Latch Failures (NHTSA Recall 15V-356 and related)
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: Door won't close or latch properly, Door ajar warning light stays on, Door opens while driving, Interior lights stay on constantly
Fix: Ford issued recalls for door latch assemblies that can fail internally. Replacement takes 1-1.5 hours per door. Check if recall work was completed; if not, should be covered by Ford.
Estimated cost: $150-300 per door if not recall-covered
AC Evaporator Core Leaks
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: AC blows warm air or loses cooling over time, Refrigerant needs frequent recharging, Sweet smell from vents, Oily residue on passenger footwell
Fix: Evaporator is buried behind the dash, requiring full dashboard removal (8-12 hours labor). This is a known weak point on 2012-2016 Focus models. Consider climate control delete in severe cases.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,000
Ignition Key Cylinder Binding (Recall 15V-657)
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: Key difficult to remove from ignition, Key stuck in ignition cylinder, Ignition won't turn to start or off position
Fix: Ford recalled certain units for ignition cylinder replacement. Takes 1-2 hours. Check recall status; should be no-cost if applicable.
Estimated cost: $200-400 if not recall-covered
Fuel System Purge Valve and Evaporative Emissions Leaks
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Check engine light with P0442, P0455, P0456 (EVAP leak codes), Fuel smell around vehicle, Difficulty fueling or tank pressure issues
Fix: Purge valve, vent valve, or canister connections fail. Diagnosis with smoke test (0.5 hours), then 1-2 hours for valve replacement depending on location. Fuel tank neck recall (15V-469) may apply.
Estimated cost: $250-600
Owner tips
If buying used: ONLY consider manual transmission models—the automatic DPS6 is a dealbreaker for reliability
If stuck with DPS6 auto: have transmission fluid changed every 30k miles even though Ford says 'lifetime fill'—helps marginally
Check Ford's database for open recalls (door latches, ignition, fuel system) before purchase
Budget $2,000+ for inevitable transmission work if buying an automatic model under 100k miles

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.
Consequence: An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Remedy: Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
Consequence: A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.
