The 2010 Range Rover with the 4.4L V8 (Jaguar AJ-V8) is a capable luxury SUV plagued by catastrophic engine failures due to nikasil liner issues and timing chain problems, plus air suspension and transmission cooler failures that make ownership beyond 80,000 miles a financial gamble.
Nikasil Cylinder Liner Failure / Piston Slap
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Cold-start knocking or rattling that quiets when warm (piston slap), Excessive oil consumption (1 quart per 1,000 mi or worse), White smoke on startup, Loss of compression, misfires, eventual catastrophic failure
Fix: Requires engine rebuild or replacement. Nikasil coating on aluminum cylinder bores wears through, causing piston-to-wall contact. Engine-out rebuild with iron sleeves or Alusil re-liner conversion is 40-60 labor hours. Many opt for used/rebuilt long block swap at 30-40 hours.
Estimated cost: $8,000-15,000
Timing Chain Guide and Tensioner Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Rattling noise from front of engine on cold start, first 3-5 seconds, Check engine light with cam/crank correlation codes (P0016, P0017), Rough idle, poor performance, Metal shavings in oil, catastrophic engine damage if chain jumps
Fix: Timing chain guides wear and break apart; tensioners fail. Requires front engine disassembly, chain replacement with updated guides and tensioners. 18-24 labor hours engine-in, often combined with water pump and thermostat. Engine-out if doing full rebuild anyway.
Estimated cost: $4,500-7,000
Air Suspension Compressor and Strut Failure
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Vehicle sagging overnight or after sitting (compressor overwork), Suspension fault warnings on dash, Compressor runs constantly or excessively loud, Uneven ride height side-to-side
Fix: Air struts develop leaks at 80k-ish, overworking compressor until it burns out. Each strut is 2-3 hours; compressor is 4-5 hours. Most shops recommend doing all four struts preventively if compressor failed. Aftermarket conversion to coils is 8-10 hours.
Estimated cost: $2,500-5,000
Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid leaking from front of vehicle (red/brown fluid), Transmission overheating warnings, Burnt transmission fluid smell, Loss of all ATF can cause immediate transmission failure
Fix: Rubber cooler hoses from transmission to radiator-mounted cooler deteriorate and rupture. Quick disconnect fittings also fail. Requires cooler line replacement and sometimes external cooler if radiator-integrated unit contaminated. 3-5 labor hours plus fluid flush. Often discovered too late after transmission damage occurred.
Estimated cost: $800-1,500
Rear Differential Pinion Seal and Bushing Wear
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Gear oil leak at front of rear differential, Whining or howling noise from rear, speed-dependent, Clunking on acceleration/deceleration if bushing worn
Fix: Pinion seal fails, allowing gear oil to leak. If driven low on oil, pinion bearings wear. Seal replacement is 3-4 hours; bearing service adds 8-10 hours and requires setup/backlash measurement. Differential bushings also wear, causing driveline vibration. Bushing replacement 4-6 hours.
Estimated cost: $600-2,500
Transfer Case Actuator Motor and Chain Wear
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Transfer case fault warning, stuck in one range, Grinding or rattling from center of vehicle, Inability to shift between high/low range, Metal contamination in transfer case fluid
Fix: Actuator motor fails electrically or mechanically; internal chain stretches causing noise. Actuator replacement is 4-6 hours. Chain service requires case disassembly, 12-16 hours, often discovers bearing damage requiring full rebuild or replacement unit.
Estimated cost: $1,200-4,000
Water Pump and Thermostat Housing Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Coolant leak from front of engine, passenger side low, Overheating or fluctuating temperature gauge, Coolant smell in cabin or under hood, Visible coolant on timing cover area
Fix: Plastic thermostat housing cracks; water pump seals fail. Water pump is buried behind timing cover and requires significant front-end disassembly. 10-14 labor hours for pump, often done with timing chains. Thermostat housing alone is 4-6 hours due to access.
Estimated cost: $1,500-3,000
Owner tips
Change engine oil every 5,000 miles with high-quality synthetic — extended intervals accelerate nikasil and timing chain wear
Inspect transmission cooler lines annually; replace proactively at 70k miles before catastrophic rupture
Service transfer case and differential fluids every 30k miles, not 'lifetime' as claimed
Budget $2,000-3,000/year for repairs after 80,000 miles; anything less is luck
Pre-purchase inspection must include borescope cylinder check, timing chain rattle test, and air suspension leak-down test
Only buy if under 60,000 miles with immaculate service records and you have a $10k repair fund — this engine grenades itself predictably and parts/labor are eye-watering.
