The 2013 Kizashi uses Suzuki's J24B engine and CVT or conventional automatic transmission. While uncommon in the U.S. market, those frequent repair jobs point to catastrophic engine failures and transmission cooling issues that define ownership risk.
Symptoms: Metallic knocking or rattling from engine block, Sudden loss of oil pressure with warning light, Excessive oil consumption (more than 1 qt per 1,000 mi), Metal shavings in oil during changes, White or blue smoke from exhaust under load
Fix: Complete engine rebuild or replacement required —pistons, rings, bearings, and often crankshaft work. 18-24 labor hours for rebuild, 12-16 for used engine swap. Root cause often oil starvation from missed changes or PCV system neglect.
Estimated cost: $4,500-8,000
Transmission Oil Cooler Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Pink or milky fluid in coolant reservoir (trans fluid mixing with coolant), Transmission overheating warnings or harsh shifts, Engine overheating simultaneously with trans issues, Coolant loss with no external leaks visible
Fix: Replace external transmission oil cooler and flush both cooling system and transmission. If coolant contaminated trans, full trans rebuild likely needed. 4-6 hours for cooler only, add 12-18 if transmission damaged. Critical to catch early.
Estimated cost: $800-1,200 (cooler only), $3,500-5,500 (with trans damage)
CVT Transmission Shudder and Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Shuddering or vibration during acceleration, especially 25-45 mph, Hesitation or delayed engagement when shifting to Drive, Whining or grinding noises from transmission, Check engine light with transmission-related codes (P0741, P0730 range)
Fix: CVT models need fluid changes every 30k mi (not lifetime fluid despite claims). Once shudder starts, belt/pulley wear usually too far gone. Remanufactured CVT replacement 10-14 hours labor. No rebuild options for Suzuki CVTs in most markets.
Estimated cost: $3,800-5,500
Fuel System Pressure Issues and Filter Clogging
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Hard starting, especially when engine warm, Stumbling or hesitation during acceleration, Intermittent stalling at idle or low speeds, Check engine light with fuel trim or pressure codes
Fix: In-tank fuel filter not serviceable as maintenance item but clogs from poor fuel quality. Requires fuel pump module replacement. 2-3 hours labor. NHTSA recalls addressed specific batches with fuel pump failures — verify recall completion.
Estimated cost: $600-900
Transmission Mount Collapse
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive vibration at idle, especially in Drive, Clunking when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Visible engine/trans movement when accelerating hard, Increased cabin noise and harshness
Fix: Hydraulic transmission mount fails, allowing powertrain to rock excessively. Replace mount and inspect other engine mounts simultaneously. 1.5-2.5 hours labor depending on access.
Estimated cost: $350-550
Takata Airbag Inflator Recall (Passenger Side)
Common · high severity
Symptoms: Recall notice from Suzuki or NHTSA, No symptoms until catastrophic failure (metal shrapnel on deployment), SRS light may illuminate if inflator circuit degrades
Fix: Part of industry-wide Takata recall. Dealer replacement only, no cost to owner. Check VIN at NHTSA.gov — critical safety issue. 1-2 hours dealer labor, covered under recall.
Estimated cost: $0 (recall repair)
Owner tips
CVT fluid changes every 30,000 mi are mandatory despite 'lifetime fluid' marketing — use only Suzuki CVT fluid NS-3 or equivalent
Monitor oil level religiously every 1,000 mi after 60k — PCV valve failures cause consumption that leads to engine damage
Inspect coolant reservoir for pink/milky appearance every oil change to catch trans cooler failure before transmission contamination
Keep fuel tank above 1/4 — low fuel levels accelerate in-tank pump/filter failures on this platform
High-risk used buy due to catastrophic engine and CVT failures; parts availability declining as Suzuki exited U.S. market — only consider with full service history and pre-purchase compression test.

Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling 2010-2013 Kizashi vehicles. The front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may misclassify an adult occupant as child and deactivate the front air bag.
Consequence: The deactivated front air bag will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Suzuki will notify owners, and service providers will replace the front passenger seat cushion, which includes a new OCS mat assembly, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed on October 29, 2021. Owners may contact Suzuki customer service at 1-800-934-0934. Suzuki's number for this recall is C5.
SEATS · 19V187000
2019-03-07
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Kizashi and 2006-2013 Grand Vitara vehicles. The front passenger leather seat may shrink due to high humidity and high temperature. As a result, the occupant classification system (OCS) sensor mat may not accurately detect if an adult or child is occupying the seat.
Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, an incorrect classification may result in the passenger frontal air bag deploying even if there is a child in the front passenger seat, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy: Suzuki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat bottom cushion, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on May 3, 2019. All second letters notifying owners of the remedy were mailed by April 10, 2020. Owners may contact Suzuki customer service at 1-800-934-0934. Suzuki's numbers for this recall are 4011 and 4012.
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE · 18V769000
2018-10-31
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Suzuki Kizashi vehicles. Dust can enter the vent line that provides fresh air to the carbon canister, restricting its air flow and possibly creating excessive negative pressure in the fuel tank which may result in the fuel tank cracking.
