The 2007 Corolla with the 1ZZ-FE 1.8L is generally bulletproof, but a critical oil consumption defect affects certain VIN ranges, leading to catastrophic engine damage if ignored. Outside that issue, this generation is one of the most reliable compacts ever built.
Excessive Oil Consumption / Piston Ring Failure (VIN-specific defect)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Burns 1+ quart per 1,000 miles, blue smoke on startup or acceleration, Check engine light for lean codes (P0171/P0174) as oil fouls sensors, Sudden engine seizure if oil level drops unnoticed
Fix: Toyota issued TSB and settlement for 2006-2008 models. Requires piston ring replacement (12-16 hours) or short-block swap (18-22 hours) if cylinder walls are scored. Must verify VIN eligibility for Toyota goodwill coverage before paying out of pocket.
Estimated cost: $3,500-6,000
Lower Engine Mount (Front Torque Mount) Failure
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive vibration at idle, especially in Drive with A/C on, Clunk or thud when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Engine rocks visibly when revved in Park
Fix: Hydraulic mount fails internally, loses damping fluid. Replacement is straightforward: 1.5-2 hours with subframe support. OEM mount is $150-200, aftermarket runs $60-100.
Estimated cost: $250-400
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Corrosion / Leaks
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Red ATF puddles under engine bay, near radiator, Transmission overheating or delayed shifts if fluid is low, Visible rust or seepage at steel cooler line connections
Fix: Steel lines rust at the crimp joints, especially in salt states. Must replace both feed and return lines as a set (2-3 hours). Some techs fab custom lines to avoid dealer-only parts wait.
Symptoms: Check engine light for EVAP codes (P0441, P0446), Difficulty fueling—pump clicks off repeatedly when tank is half-full, Fuel smell near rear of vehicle, especially after fill-up
Fix: Canister clogs from liquid fuel ingestion (topping off tank). Diagnosis requires smoke test to rule out purge valve or vent valve first (1 hour diag, 1.5-2 hours if canister replacement needed). Canister is $200-300 part.
Estimated cost: $350-550
Front Wheel Bearing Noise
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Growling or humming that increases with speed, changes with turning, ABS light may trigger intermittently if sensor is damaged, Wheel play detectable when jacked up (though often noise appears first)
Fix: Hub assembly replacement, not serviceable bearings. 1.5-2 hours per side. Common on cars driven in wet/salty conditions. Replace in pairs if both sides are noisy.
Estimated cost: $250-400 per side
Valve Cover Gasket Oil Seepage
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 120,000+ mi
Symptoms: Oil smell in cabin when heater is on, visible seepage on exhaust side of head, No significant drips, just a sheen of oil on block, Spark plug wells may collect oil if ignored long enough
Fix: Rubber gasket hardens with age. Replacement is easy on 1ZZ: 1-1.5 hours, gasket is $30-50. Good preventive maintenance at high mileage, not urgent unless oil reaches plug tubes.
Estimated cost: $150-250
Owner tips
If buying used, verify VIN against Toyota's oil consumption settlement—affected cars can get free short-block through ~150k miles if documented consumption exists.
Check oil every 500-1000 miles religiously on 2006-2008 models, even if no consumption history is known. This engine will not warn you before it seizes.
Replace engine mount and transmission mount together if one fails—they tend to go at similar intervals and you're already under there.
Avoid topping off the fuel tank past the first click; this generation's EVAP system is sensitive to liquid fuel in the vapor lines.
Buy it if the VIN is clear of the oil consumption defect or the engine has already been replaced under warranty—otherwise it's a $4,000 gamble wrapped in the most reliable compact chassis Toyota ever made.
