What this code means

The DME detected a severe misfire on Cylinder 1 that triggered fuel injector shut-off for that cylinder to protect the catalytic converter. BMW uses cylinder-specific fuel cut-off to prevent unburned fuel from damaging the catalyst.

Symptoms

• Check Engine Light flashing
• Rough running
• Loss of power
• Exhaust smell of unburned fuel
• Vibration at idle

• Faulty ignition coil Cylinder 1
• Worn or fouled spark plug Cylinder 1
• Faulty fuel injector Cylinder 1
• Low compression Cylinder 1
• Vacuum leak at Cylinder 1 intake runner

Diagnostic steps

1. Read misfire counters for all cylinders
2. Swap ignition coil from Cylinder 1 to another cylinder and retest
3. Inspect spark plug Cylinder 1
4. Test fuel injector Cylinder 1
5. Perform compression test
