Secondary Air Injection System Bank 1
1997-2004 Buick Regal 3.8L V6
Description
The PCM detected that the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system is not functioning properly on Bank 1. During the AIR test, the PCM activates the air pump during closed-loop operation and monitors O2 sensor voltages. If the system is working, O2 sensor voltage should go low and short-term fuel trim should go high. P1415 sets when no O2 sensor voltage change is detected.
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light
- Failed emissions test
- Rough idle during cold start
- Decreased fuel efficiency
- Reduced engine performance on startup
Common Causes
- Faulty secondary air injection pump
- Clogged or stuck AIR check valve
- Damaged or restricted AIR hose
- AIR pump relay or fuse failure
- Carbon buildup in AIR passages
- Vacuum line leak to AIR components
- Wiring issue to AIR pump
Diagnostic Steps
- Check AIR pump fuse and relay
- Listen for AIR pump operation during cold start
- Inspect AIR check valve for blockage
- Check vacuum lines to AIR system
- Test AIR pump motor
- Monitor O2 sensor voltage during AIR test
Repair Notes
Check AIR pump relay and fuse first. Inspect check valves for restriction (one per bank). Replace AIR pump if it does not run.
