Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Failed On

2000-2003 Ford Excursion 7.3L V8 Power Stroke Diesel

High SeverityPowertrain

Description

The TCC solenoid has failed in the on/engaged position. The torque converter clutch remains engaged when it should not be, which can cause the engine to stall when coming to a stop (similar to a manual transmission with the clutch engaged).

Symptoms

  • Engine stalls when stopping in Drive
  • Harsh engagement at low speeds
  • Vehicle shudders at slow speeds
  • Check Engine Light

Common Causes

  • TCC solenoid stuck mechanically on
  • Electrical fault keeping solenoid energized
  • Valve body TCC apply valve stuck
  • Contaminated transmission fluid

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Test TCC solenoid β€” it should de-energize when commanded off
  2. Check solenoid wiring for shorts to power
  3. Check valve body for stuck TCC valve
  4. Monitor TCC status on scan tool during deceleration

Repair Notes

Replace TCC solenoid. Inspect valve body. May require transmission pan removal.
