The 2019 Expedition shares the 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 with the F-150, and unfortunately inherits some of its catastrophic failure modes. While many run fine past 100k, a significant minority experience low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) and cam phaser failures that can destroy engines without warning.
Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) Engine Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 30,000-80,000 mi
Symptoms: Sudden catastrophic knocking under light throttle acceleration, Metal debris in oil filter during changes, Complete loss of power with check engine light, Piston skirt cracking visible only after teardown
Fix: Requires full short-block replacement or engine rebuild including pistons, rings, bearings, and usually crankshaft. 18-24 labor hours for in-frame rebuild, 25-30 for full removal. Ford extended warranty to 10yr/150k on some VINs but not all 2019s are covered.
Estimated cost: $8,000-15,000
Cam Phaser Failure and Timing Chain Stretch
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Cold-start rattle lasting 3-10 seconds that progressively worsens, P0016/P0017/P0018 cam correlation codes, Check engine light with reduced power mode, Metallic ticking that doesn't go away when warm
Fix: Requires both cam phasers, timing chains, guides, tensioners, and often VCT solenoids. 14-18 labor hours. Must use updated Ford parts (phaser design changed mid-2019). Ignoring it leads to jumped timing and bent valves.
Estimated cost: $3,500-5,500
10R80 Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 40,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid puddle under front of vehicle, Burnt transmission smell after highway driving, Slipping or delayed shifts when fluid gets low, Pink fluid visible on frame rails or crossmember
Fix: Cooler lines crack at crimp points near radiator. Replace both lines and top off fluid. 2-3 labor hours. If neglected and trans runs low, internal damage requires rebuild at 20+ hours.
Estimated cost: $400-800
Transmission Harsh Shifts and Shudder (10R80)
Common · medium severity
Symptoms: Hard 2-3 or 3-4 upshifts especially when cold, Shudder during light acceleration at 20-40 mph, Clunk when shifting into Drive or Reverse, Improved slightly after fluid changes but returns
Fix: Often requires TCM reflash (TSB 21-2283), adaptive learning reset, and Mercon ULV fluid change. If that fails, torque converter replacement at 10-12 hours. Some cases need valve body replacement at 8-10 hours.
Estimated cost: $150-3,200
Rear Suspension Knuckle Bolt Loosening
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 20,000-60,000 mi
Symptoms: Metallic clunking over bumps from rear, Wandering rear end feel at highway speed, Visible gap at knuckle-to-lower control arm joint, Uneven rear tire wear
Fix: Recall 20S38 covers inspection and retorquing of rear knuckle bolts. If bolts loosened significantly, knuckle and control arm bushings may need replacement. 2-4 hours per side if parts are damaged.
Estimated cost: $0-1,500
Front Seat Recliner Pawl Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: Driver or passenger seat back suddenly reclines during braking, Recliner handle feels loose or doesn't catch, Seat rocks forward and back at recline pivot, Clicking sound when adjusting seat back angle
Fix: Recall 20S47 covers replacement of seat recliner mechanism. Dealer-only repair typically, 1.5-2 hours per seat. DIY not recommended due to pretensioner risks.
Estimated cost: $0-800
Owner tips
Use only Motorcraft oil and change every 5,000 miles religiously—these EcoBoosts are oil-sensitive and LSPI risk increases with worn oil
Check oil filter media for metal flakes at every change; catching phaser or piston wear early can save the engine
Mercon ULV fluid changes at 40k intervals help the 10R80 live longer; dealer or quality indie only, this fluid is picky
Address cam phaser rattle immediately when it starts—waiting turns a $4k job into a $12k job when timing jumps
Buy only with comprehensive warranty or bulletproof service records showing recent cam phaser replacement—the EcoBoost V6 is a ticking time bomb without meticulous maintenance.
