The E46 330i with the M54 3.0L inline-six is a driver's car with excellent handling and a smooth powertrain, but it suffers from notorious cooling system failures, rear subframe cracking issues, and—critically—window regulator failures that plague nearly every car. The powertrain is generally solid if maintained, but neglect leads to expensive failures.
Cooling System Comprehensive Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Coolant loss with no visible leak, Overheating or temp gauge fluctuation, White smoke from exhaust on cold start, Expansion tank cracking at seams
Fix: The plastic cooling components fail predictably: expansion tank, radiator neck, water pump, thermostat housing. Smart shops replace all at once (preventive overhaul). Water pump alone is 3-4 hours; full system refresh is 6-8 hours.Ignoring this leads to head gasket failure.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,200
Rear Subframe Mounting Point Cracks
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking from rear over bumps, Alignment won't hold or rear toe goes out of spec, Visible cracks in sheet metal around subframe mounts (inspect from underneath)
Fix: The floor pan where the subframe bolts crack due to stress. Proper repair requires subframe removal, welding in reinforcement plates, and sometimes cutting out/replacing the mounting pockets. Budget 12-16 hours labor for professional reinforcement. Band-aid fixes fail within a year.
Estimated cost: $2,500-4,500
Window Regulator Failure (All Four Windows)
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Window drops into door or won't go up, Grinding/clicking noise when operating window, Window goes up crooked or binds
Fix: The plastic regulator clips break and the cables fray. This affects all four doors eventually. Each door is 1.5-2 hours labor. Aftermarket regulators fail faster than OEM; use OEM or quality Euro brands. Many owners do all four preemptively.
Estimated cost: $300-500 per window
VANOS Seals and Solenoids
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Cold start rattle for 2-3 seconds, Loss of power in mid-range RPM, Rough idle when warm, Check engine light with cam timing codes
Fix: The variable valve timing (VANOS) system uses seals that harden and solenoids that clog. Beisan Systems or OEM rebuild kit plus solenoid replacement. Takes 4-6 hours with the right tools. Preventive fix at 100k saves the VANOS unit itself.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Oil Filter Housing Gasket Leak
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Oil seepage at front of engine, passenger side, Burning oil smell after driving, Oil level drops slowly between changes
Fix: The plastic oil filter housing warps and the gasket fails. Replacement housing and gasket is straightforward but requires removing intake components. 2-3 hours labor. Use upgraded aluminum housing to prevent recurrence.
Estimated cost: $400-700
Control Arm Bushings (Front Suspension)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking over bumps, Steering wander or vague on-center feel, Inner tire wear, Car pulls during braking
Fix: E46 uses pressed-in bushings that tear. The thrust arm bushings fail first, then lower control arms. Most shops replace entire arms vs. pressing bushings (more reliable, avoids alignment issues). Front end refresh with all arms is 4-6 hours.
Estimated cost: $1,000-1,800
CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) System Clogging
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: High oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000 mi), Rough idle, Oil in intake manifold or throttle body, Whistling sound from engine bay
Fix: The CCV valve and hoses clog, causing crankcase pressure that forces oil past seals. Full system replacement includes valve cover gasket, CCV valve, hoses. 3-4 hours labor. Ignoring this leads to valve cover gasket leaks and turbo-like oil consumption.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000
Owner tips
Replace the entire cooling system proactively at 80k—expansion tank, radiator, water pump, thermostat housing, hoses. It will fail; control when.
Inspect rear subframe mounts every alignment—catch cracks early before they propagate and require full floor pan surgery.
Use quality synthetic oil (BMW LL-01 spec) and change every 5,000 mi despite the 15k interval—M54 sludge kills VANOS.
Budget $2,000/year in deferred maintenance when buying high-mileage examples; these are 20-year-old German cars now.
Buy one if you wrench yourself or have a trusted indie BMW shop—budget $2k/year for maintenance, avoid examples with subframe rust or cooling neglect, and you'll have one of the best-driving sedans of its era.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE · 20V018000
2020-01-15 · EA15001
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2005 323iT, 325iT, 325xiT, 320i, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 330i and 330xi and 2000-2006 323Ci, 325Ci, 328Ci, 330Ci, M3 Coupe, 323Cic, 325Cic, 330Cic, and M3 Convertible vehicles equipped with non-desiccated frontal Takata PSAN inflators and PSPI passenger frontal air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger's front air bag, free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
