The 2008 Vibe with the 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine is fundamentally a rebadged Toyota Matrix, sharing Toyota's reliability DNA but suffering from one catastrophic flaw: excessive oil consumption leading to engine failure. Otherwise a solid compact wagon.
2AZ-FE Engine Oil Consumption / Piston Ring Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: burning through 1+ quart of oil every 1,000 miles, blue smoke on startup or acceleration, low oil pressure warning, engine knock or seizure if oil runs critically low, fouled spark plugs
Fix: Toyota's defective piston ring design allows oil to bypass into combustion chambers. Fix requires engine teardown for piston ring replacement (12-16 hours) or short block replacement (14-18 hours). Many owners don't catch it until catastrophic damage occurs. Toyota extended warranty to 10yr/150k on some VINs but 2008 often falls outside coverage.
Estimated cost: $3,500-6,500
Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Line Corrosion
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: transmission fluid leaking near radiator, pink fluid puddles under vehicle, transmission overheating, hard or delayed shifts
Fix: Steel cooler lines rust through where they connect to the radiator, especially in salt-belt states. Requires replacement of both cooler lines and sometimes the radiator if contamination occurred (3-5 hours). Not a difficult job but commonly missed until significant fluid loss.
Estimated cost: $400-800
Rear Engine/Transmission Mount Failure
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: clunking when shifting from Park to Drive, excessive vibration at idle, engine rocking visible under hood during acceleration, juddering during takeoff
Fix: The rear dogbone mount wears out and separates. Simple replacement (1.5-2 hours) but requires supporting the engine. OEM Toyota mount lasts longer than aftermarket. Very common wear item on this platform.
Estimated cost: $250-400
Evaporative Emissions System Leaks
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: check engine light with P0441/P0446 codes, fuel smell near rear of vehicle, difficulty filling gas tank (pump clicks off repeatedly)
Fix: Charcoal canister vent valve or vapor hoses crack and leak. Diagnosis requires smoke test (0.5 hours) then replacement of failed component — usually the vent valve on top of tank or canister itself (1.5-2.5 hours depending on component). Won't strand you but fails emissions testing.
Estimated cost: $300-600
Front Lower Control Arm Bushings
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 100,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: clunking over bumps, steering wander or vague feel, inner tire wear, visible cracking in rubber bushings during inspection
Fix: Front lower control arm rear bushings deteriorate and cause alignment issues. Can replace bushings only with press (2 hours) or swap entire control arms (1.5 hours per side). Arms are easier and include ball joint. Alignment required after (additional 1 hour).
Estimated cost: $500-800
Valve Cover Gasket Oil Leaks
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 110,000-160,000 mi
Symptoms: burning oil smell from engine bay, oil residue on valve cover exterior, oil seeping onto exhaust manifold, slight oil consumption without blue smoke
Fix: Valve cover gasket hardens and leaks, common on 2AZ engines with age. Straightforward replacement includes new grommets and half-moon seals (2-2.5 hours). Good opportunity to inspect spark plug tubes for oil intrusion.
Estimated cost: $300-500
Owner tips
Check oil level every fillup religiously — the 2AZ oil consumption issue can destroy the engine in under 500 miles if ignored
Use 0W-20 full synthetic and change every 5,000 miles to minimize ring coking
Inspect transmission cooler lines annually in rust-belt states
Keep receipts if engine work was done under Toyota's ZE7 warranty extension — adds resale value
Replace rear engine mount preemptively around 100k to avoid transmission damage from excessive movement
Excellent utility and Toyota reliability except for the oil-burning Achilles heel — verify oil consumption history or budget for an engine, otherwise a smart buy under $5k.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE · 19V627000
2019-08-28
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2003-2008 Corolla, 2005-2008 Corolla Matrix, and Pontiac Vibe vehicles equipped with a front passenger air bag assembly replaced under a prior recall. The air bag may not unfold as designed during inflation under high temperature conditions, possibly resulting in the air bag not inflating properly.
Consequence: An improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy: Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag assembly or sub-assembly, free of charge. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are K1Q and K0Q. Pontiac owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is N192273760.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Lexus SC vehicles manufactured August 3, 2007, to July 30, 2010, 2008 Toyota Corolla vehicles manufactured May 25, 2007, to December 21, 2007, 2008 Toyota Corolla Matrix vehicles manufactured June 1, 2007, to December 18, 2007, and 2008 Pontiac Vibe vehicles manufactured June 1, 2007, to January 2, 2008. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
Remedy: The recall began on March 25, 2016 for Toyota and Lexus vehicle owners. The recall began on June 23, 2016 for GM owners. The respective dealers will either replace the front passenger air bag inflator or the entire front passenger air bag assembly depending on the model. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. This recall expands recall 15V-285.
