The 2003 Impreza 2.5L (EJ25) is mechanically solid in many respects but plagued by head gasket failures and automatic transmission issues that can make ownership expensive past 100k miles. The non-turbo models are generally more reliable than WRX variants, but all share the head gasket weakness.
Head Gasket Failure (External Oil Leaks)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Oil seepage from cylinder head mating surfaces, visible as dark staining below heads, Coolant smell after driving, sometimes visible steam but not always, Oil consumption increases gradually, Check engine light for lean codes if coolant mixing with oil
Fix: Full head gasket replacement requires removing engine or extensive teardown in-chassis. Most shops pull the engine for access. Expect 14-18 hours labor, includes resurfacing heads, new timing components, water pump, and all gaskets. Critical to use OEM Subaru gaskets—aftermarket fail faster.
Estimated cost: $2,200-3,500
Automatic Transmission Failure (4EAT)
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 120,000-180,000 mi
Symptoms: Delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive, especially when cold, Slipping between gears under moderate throttle, Shuddering during 2-3 or 3-4 upshifts, Burnt transmission fluid smell, fluid turns dark brown/black
Fix: Transmission rebuild runs 12-16 hours including R&R. Many shops recommend replacement with low-mileage junkyard unit (8-10 hours) as more cost-effective. Torque converter and valve body are common culprits. Fluid neglect accelerates failure—should be changed every 30k despite Subaru claiming 'lifetime' fill.
Estimated cost: $2,800-4,200
Rear Wheel Bearing Failure
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Droning or humming noise from rear that increases with speed, Noise changes pitch in turns (louder on outside wheel), Vibration felt through seat at highway speeds, ABS warning light if bearing disintegrates and damages tone ring
Fix: Rear hub assemblies are non-serviceable—replace entire unit. Each side is 1.5-2 hours. Rust belt cars see accelerated failure due to salt corrosion. Often need penetrating oil and heat to remove. Replace both sides if one fails over 100k miles.
Estimated cost: $350-550 per side
Front Lower Control Arm Bushing Deterioration
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking from front suspension over bumps, Wandering or vague steering feel, Uneven tire wear on inside edges, Visible cracking or tearing of rubber bushings on inspection
Fix: Factory bushings are pressed into control arms. Most techs replace entire arms with aftermarket units (Moog, Whiteline) rather than pressing new bushings. Front alignment required after. About 3-4 hours for both sides including alignment.
Estimated cost: $600-900
Exhaust System Corrosion and Cat Converter Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-160,000 mi
Symptoms: Rattling from underneath at idle or light acceleration, Exhaust leak noise—ticking or hissing, Check engine light P0420 (catalyst efficiency below threshold), Sulfur/rotten egg smell on hard acceleration
Fix: Catalytic converters are part of front Y-pipe assembly. Subaru Y-pipes rust through at flex joints and cat flanges. Aftermarket cats available but OEM lasts longer. Y-pipe replacement is 2-3 hours. If just fixing rust holes, patch welding is temporary—typically fails again within a year.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Engine Oil Consumption (Piston Ring Land Failure)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Consuming 1 quart per 1,000-1,500 miles with no visible leaks, Blue smoke on startup or deceleration, Spark plugs oil-fouled on inspection, Exhaust smells oily, carbon buildup on tailpipe
Fix: Caused by piston ring land cracking—design flaw in early EJ25D engines. Only real fix is engine rebuild or short block replacement (16-20 hours). Some owners manage by adding oil frequently, but severe cases risk bearing damage from oil starvation. Used short blocks from Japan are common swap option.
Estimated cost: $3,500-5,500
Owner tips
Change transmission fluid every 30k miles regardless of manual or auto—extends life dramatically
Inspect head gaskets annually after 80k miles; catching leaks early can prevent overheating and warped heads
Use Subaru coolant conditioner additive—helps delay head gasket failure on cars not yet leaking
Avoid short trips and let engine warm fully—reduces oil consumption and carbon buildup
Undercoat exhaust components and suspension if in salt belt—Subaru steel corrodes aggressively
Buy only if head gaskets already done with receipts showing OEM parts, or budget $3k for eventual repairs—solid drivetrain otherwise but expensive to maintain past 100k.
