The 2007 Tribeca with the 3.0L H6 is Subaru's first luxury SUV attempt, and while the engine is generally more robust than the turbo four-cylinders, it shares the boxer's notorious head gasket weakness and suffers from a fragile 5-speed automatic transmission and oil-consumption issues at higher mileage.
Head Gasket Failure (External Leaks)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Oil seepage at cylinder head mating surfaces visible from below, Coolant smell after hot shutdown, Slow coolant loss without visible external leaks, Oil residue around exhaust heat shields
Fix: Both head gaskets require engine removal or dropping the subframe for proper access. Expect 16-20 hours labor. Machine shop head resurfacing adds time. Always replace timing components, water pump, and all coolant hoses while apart.
Estimated cost: $2,800-4,200
Excessive Oil Consumption (Piston Ring Land Failure)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Burning 1+ quart every 1,000-1,500 miles, Blue smoke on cold start or hard acceleration, Carbon buildup on tail pipes, Check engine light for lean condition if oil gets too low
Fix: Root cause is piston ring land cracking or carbon buildup preventing ring movement. Only real fix is engine rebuild or short-block replacement. Half-measures like top-end cleaning rarely last. 20-28 hours labor for shortblock swap.
Estimated cost: $4,500-7,500
5-Speed Automatic Transmission Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 100,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Harsh 2-3 or 3-4 shifts when cold, Slipping under load, especially uphill, Shudder during light throttle acceleration, Metal debris in pan during fluid service, Delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse
Fix: The 5EAT in these is weak for the vehicle weight. Valve body issues and torque converter failure are common. Transmission oil cooler lines rust through and contaminate fluid. Rebuild runs 18-24 hours; remanufactured unit is often more cost-effective. Always replace external cooler and flush lines.
Estimated cost: $3,200-5,500
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Rust and Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: ATF puddles under vehicle, near front crossmember, Low transmission fluid warnings, Burnt transmission smell, Rapid fluid loss leading to overheating
Fix: Steel lines rust from road salt exposure. Leaks contaminate fluid and accelerate transmission wear. Replace both cooler lines and external cooler as a set. 2-3 hours labor. Catch this early before transmission damage occurs.
Estimated cost: $400-750
Rear Differential Carrier Bearing Noise
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Whining or growling from rear that increases with speed, Noise changes pitch during acceleration/deceleration, Vibration through rear floor at highway speeds
Fix: Carrier bearings wear from heat and lack of maintenance. Requires differential disassembly, bearing replacement, and proper preload setup. 6-8 hours labor. Some shops replace entire rear diff assembly to save time.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,200
Takata Airbag Inflator Recall Complications
Common · high severity
Symptoms: Active NHTSA recall for passenger airbag inflator rupture risk, Potential deployment issues in high-humidity climates
Fix: Five separate recalls for frontal passenger airbag inflators. Parts availability has been inconsistent. Verify completion of all recall campaigns before purchase — explosively deploying inflator can cause serious injury. Free at dealership but appointment delays are common.
Estimated cost: $0
Ignition Switch Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: Key gets stuck in ignition, Engine won't crank despite battery being good, Accessories stay on after key removal, Intermittent no-start conditions
Fix: Subject to NHTSA recall. Switch contacts wear and prevent starting or cause electrical gremlins. Replacement takes 1-2 hours including steering column disassembly. Recall repair is free at dealer; aftermarket switch runs about $150 plus labor if out of pocket.
Estimated cost: $0-400
Owner tips
Change transmission fluid every 30,000 miles with Subaru ATF-HP or equivalent — the 5EAT is marginal for this vehicle's weight
Inspect transmission cooler lines annually in salt states; rust develops from the inside out
Monitor oil consumption closely after 80k miles; catching ring issues early may allow top-end carbon cleaning before full rebuild
Use 5W-30 synthetic and change every 3,750 miles if any oil consumption is present — these engines are sensitive to sludge
Complete all Takata airbag recalls before purchase and keep documentation — some VINs have multiple campaigns
Pass unless it has documented head gasket replacement, proven oil consumption under 1 qt/3k miles, and a recent transmission service with clean fluid — the H6 is solid but repair costs on these three items will exceed the vehicle's value.

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

STRUCTURE:BODY:HOOD · 16V060000
2016-02-03
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Tribeca vehicles manufactured November 16, 2004, to January 27, 2014. Due to a possible malfunction of the hood safety system and hood lock system, the hood may open unexpectedly while driving.

Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will complete this recall in two phases. Phase one will involve inspection, cleaning, and
lubricating the hood safety and hood lock systems. If after this is performed the hood latch does not operate properly, it will be replaced with a new current style part. Phase two will involve installing an improved hood safety system and hood lock system. Interim notification was mailed March 4, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. 2012-12-26
Subaru is recalling certain model year 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback vehicles, certain model year 2006 through 2012 Tribeca vehicles sold before January 2012, and certain model year 2009 through 2012 Forester vehicles sold before January 2012. Up to 78,650 of these vehicles may have been equipped with accessory puddle lights that, when illuminated, brighten the area under the doors of the vehicle. A short circuit can develop when either the puddle light or connector are exposed to an electrolytic moisture source (such as road spray that has road salt in it) and it penetrates the circuit board of the puddle light or the pins of the puddle light connector(s).
Consequence: Over time, migration of the moisture into the circuit board and/or into the connector cavity, may result in a short circuit of the puddle light system. This may generate heat which may melt the plastic resulting in smoke or fire.
Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional fused-harness, free of charge. The recall began February 19, 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information.
