What this code means

The Mass Air Flow sensor reading is outside the expected range during the PCM self-test. The sensor value does not match expected parameters for the current engine operating conditions.

Symptoms

• Check Engine Light
• Poor idle quality
• Hesitation
• Poor fuel economy
• Black smoke from exhaust

Common causes

• Dirty MAF sensor
• Vacuum leak after MAF sensor
• Restricted air filter
• Faulty MAF sensor
• Intake air leak

Diagnostic steps

1. Check and replace air filter if dirty
2. Inspect intake ductwork for leaks between MAF and throttle body
3. Clean MAF sensor element with MAF cleaner spray
4. Check for vacuum leaks using smoke test
5. Compare MAF readings to known-good values at idle and 2500 RPM
