Fix: Full transmission rebuild or replacement required. The ZF-derived automatic used in these is poorly adapted to the torque characteristics of the diesel engine and suffers from inadequate lubrication to clutch packs. Rebuild involves replacing clutch packs, bands, valve body, output shaft bearing, and throw-out bearing. Expect 18-24 hours labor for rebuild, 10-12 hours for replacement with used unit.

Fix: Plastic bushings in the linkage and kickdown cable deteriorate. Kickdown cable often seizes causing poor transmission performance and reduced fuel economy. Replace entire shift linkage assembly and kickdown cable as a set. Adjustment critical after installation. 3-4 hours labor.

Fix: The 2.5L diesel is extremely sensitive to fuel quality and the filter housing design allows water accumulation. In regions with poor diesel quality, filter clogs every 5,000-8,000 miles instead of the specified 15,000. Many owners install aftermarket water separator. Filter replacement is straightforward but requires careful bleeding. 0.5-1 hour labor.
