Parts

  • Combination switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering column cover clips (if broken) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure vehicle is powered off and key fob is at least 15 feet away from vehicle
  3. Open driver's door and leave open throughout procedure
  4. Disconnect 12V battery negative terminal located in front trunk compartment
  5. Wait minimum 5 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
  6. Adjust steering column to lowest and most forward position for access
  7. Set steering wheel to center/straight position

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Using trim panel removal tools, carefully pry the lower steering column cover starting from the bottom rear edge. Release the retaining clips by applying even pressure. Once lower cover is loose, locate and remove two T20 Torx screws securing the cover to the column. Remove lower cover completely and set aside.
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
Locate the upper steering column cover that wraps around the top of the column. Release the retaining clips on both sides using trim removal tools. Gently lift the upper cover upward and away from the column, being careful not to snag any wiring. Remove the cover and set aside with lower cover.
  3. 3
    Disconnect driver information display connector
Locate the driver information display connector on the left side of the column assembly. Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the connector. Route the wire harness clear of the work area.
  4. 4
    Remove combination switch mounting fasteners
Locate the two T30 Torx screws securing the combination switch assembly to the steering column on the left side. Remove both screws completely and retain for reinstallation. Note the position of any alignment tabs or guide pins.
  5. 5
    Disconnect combination switch main connectors
Locate the primary electrical connector(s) for the combination switch assembly. These are typically gray or black multi-pin connectors. Press the locking tabs firmly and pull the connectors straight out from the switch body. There may be 2-3 separate connectors depending on vehicle configuration. Tag or photograph each connector position.
  6. 6
    Remove combination switch assembly
With all fasteners and electrical connections removed, carefully slide the combination switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have alignment guides that require slight rotation or tilting to clear. Remove the assembly completely from the vehicle and inspect the mounting area for damage or debris.
  7. 7
    Inspect and clean mounting surfaces
Examine the steering column mounting points for any wear, damage, or corrosion. Clean the mounting surface with electrical contact cleaner if needed. Inspect all electrical connectors on the column side for bent pins, corrosion, or damage. Verify alignment pins and guides are intact.
  8. 8
    Prepare new combination switch
Remove the new combination switch from packaging. Verify part number matches the original unit. Check that all stalks and levers move smoothly and return to center position. Do not force any controls. Inspect electrical connector pins for straightness and cleanliness.
  9. 9
    Install new combination switch assembly
Position the new combination switch assembly near the steering column, aligning any guide pins or tabs with their corresponding slots. Carefully slide the assembly onto the column, ensuring proper engagement of all alignment features. Do not force; the switch should slide into position with light pressure.
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect all electrical connectors to the combination switch in the reverse order of removal, referring to your documentation or photos. Each connector should click firmly into place. Gently tug on each connector to verify secure locking. Ensure no wires are pinched or under tension.
  11. 11
    Install combination switch mounting fasteners
Install the two T30 Torx screws through the combination switch mounting holes into the steering column. Start both screws by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten screws evenly in a cross pattern to secure the assembly firmly without over-tightening and stripping threads.
  12. 12
    Reconnect driver information display
Route the driver information display connector back to its original position. Align the connector and push firmly until it clicks into the locked position. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged.
  13. 13
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover over the column, ensuring all wiring is properly routed and not pinched. Press the cover down until all retaining clips engage with audible clicks. Install the lower column cover, aligning it with the upper cover. Install the two T20 Torx screws and tighten securely. Press the lower cover edges until all clips are fully seated.
  14. 14
Reconnect 12V battery and initialize system
Return to front trunk and reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Tighten the terminal connection securely. Close all doors and allow vehicle systems to initialize for approximately 2 minutes. The vehicle may perform self-checks during this time.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all steering column covers are securely fastened with no gaps or misalignment
  2. Ensure no tools or parts were left in the steering column area
  3. Confirm steering wheel movement is not obstructed by any component
  4. Check that all trim panels are flush and clips are fully engaged

Verification

  • Turn vehicle to accessory mode and verify the instrument cluster displays properly with no warning lights related to combination switch
  • Test turn signal operation in both left and right positions, confirming proper flashing and cancellation
  • Test high beam and low beam operation using the stalk, verifying proper function and indicator lights
  • Activate windshield wipers through all speed settings including intermittent, low, and high, confirming proper operation
  • Test windshield washer function by pulling the stalk toward you
  • If equipped, test cruise control activation and controls on the combination switch
  • Verify all stalks return to center or off position correctly with no binding or resistance
  • Check for any new warning messages or fault codes in the vehicle system
  • Perform a short test drive to confirm all combination switch functions operate correctly under normal driving conditions
