This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the HVAC control panel in the 2024 Rivian EDV 500, including proper disconnection of the high-voltage battery system and climate control interfaces.

Warnings

⚠️This vehicle uses high-voltage electrical systems. Failure to properly disable the high-voltage system can result in severe injury or death from electrical shock.
⚠️Wait a minimum of 5 minutes after disabling high-voltage systems before beginning work to allow capacitors to discharge.
The HVAC control panel is connected to the vehicle's CAN bus network. Improper disconnection may trigger fault codes requiring dealer-level diagnostics.
ℹ️This procedure requires Rivian service mode activation to prevent system errors during control panel disconnection.

Parts

  • HVAC control panel assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Center console trim clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure vehicle is in Park mode with all systems powered down
  3. Connect diagnostic scanner and activate Rivian service mode to prevent HVAC system errors
  4. Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes for system shutdown
  5. Verify high-voltage system is disabled using multimeter at HV junction box (should read 0V)
  6. Place fender covers and seat covers to protect interior surfaces during work

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower center console trim
Starting at the rear of the center console, use trim removal tools to carefully release the lower trim panel clips. There are 6 clips total: 2 at the rear near the cup holders, 2 at mid-section, and 2 near the front. Work from rear to front, applying even pressure to avoid breaking clips. Once clips are released, lift the lower trim panel up and away from the console.
  2. 2
    Disconnect wireless charging pad connector
Locate the wireless charging pad connector beneath the lower trim panel. Press the connector lock tab and pull straight back to disconnect. Route the connector safely aside to prevent damage during panel removal.
  3. 3
Remove center stack lower mounting screws
Using a T20 Torx driver, remove the four lower mounting screws securing the center stack assembly. Two screws are located at the bottom front edge of the console opening, and two are positioned on either side of the center stack housing. Store screws in a labeled container.
  4. 4
Remove side trim panels from center stack
Carefully pry away the side trim panels on both left and right sides of the center stack. Each panel is secured by 3 clips. Start at the bottom edge and work upward, using a trim tool wrapped in cloth to prevent scratching. Once clips release, set panels aside.
  5. 5
Access HVAC control panel mounting screws
With side panels removed, locate the four T25 Torx screws securing the HVAC control panel assembly (two on each side). Remove all four screws. The control panel will remain in place due to electrical connectors on the rear side.
  6. 6
    Carefully pull control panel forward
Grasp the HVAC control panel firmly on both sides and pull straight forward approximately 2-3 inches. Use even pressure to avoid binding. The panel should slide forward on mounting rails. Do not pull more than necessary as electrical connectors have limited slack.
  7. 7
    Disconnect primary HVAC connector
Reach behind the control panel and locate the large primary HVAC connector (gray, 20-pin connector). Press down on the orange connector lock tab while pulling the connector straight back. This connector provides power and CAN bus communication to the control panel.
  8. 8
    Disconnect secondary control connectors
Locate and disconnect two additional connectors: the temperature sensor feedback connector (small black 4-pin) and the panel illumination connector (white 2-pin). Each has a small lock tab that must be pressed before pulling the connector free. Note the orientation and routing of each connector for reinstallation.
  9. 9
    Remove HVAC control panel assembly
With all electrical connections disconnected, carefully remove the HVAC control panel from the center stack opening. Guide any remaining wiring through the panel opening and set the old panel aside on a clean, protected surface.
  10. 10
Prepare new control panel for installation
Unpack the new HVAC control panel. Inspect for any shipping damage. Verify that all mounting brackets and clips are properly attached to the new panel. Check that the panel firmware version is current (should match or exceed the version displayed in service mode).
  11. 11
Connect electrical connectors to new panel
Before inserting the new panel into the dash, connect all three electrical connectors in reverse order: first the panel illumination connector (white 2-pin), then the temperature sensor feedback (black 4-pin), and finally the primary HVAC connector (gray 20-pin). Ensure each connector clicks into place and the lock tabs are fully engaged.
  12. 12
Install new control panel into center stack
Carefully guide the new control panel with attached wiring into the center stack opening. Align the panel with the mounting rails and push straight back until the panel is flush with the surrounding trim. Ensure no wires are pinched between the panel and mounting surface.
  13. 13
    Secure control panel mounting screws
Install and hand-tighten the four T25 Torx mounting screws (two per side). Tighten screws in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Tighten firmly but do not over-torque as the mounting points are plastic-threaded inserts.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall side trim panels by aligning clips and pressing firmly until all clips engage with audible clicks
  2. Reinstall center stack lower mounting screws using T20 Torx driver, tightening in cross pattern
  3. Reconnect wireless charging pad connector ensuring lock tab engages
  4. Reinstall lower center console trim panel by aligning all 6 clip positions and pressing firmly until seated
  5. Reconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal
  6. Exit Rivian service mode using diagnostic scanner to restore normal HVAC operation
  7. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that may have been set during the procedure

Verification

  • Power on the vehicle and verify the HVAC control panel illuminates and displays properly
  • Test all HVAC functions: fan speed control, temperature adjustment, mode selection (defrost, floor, vent), and recirculation button
  • Verify climate control responds correctly to touch inputs and physical button presses
  • Confirm temperature sensor readings are displaying correctly in vehicle settings
  • Check that automatic climate control functions properly in AUTO mode
  • Verify wireless charging pad functions correctly if equipped
  • Use diagnostic scanner to confirm no active fault codes related to HVAC or climate control systems
  • Test heated seat controls through the HVAC panel if integrated
  • Verify panel illumination adjusts correctly with vehicle ambient lighting settings
