This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the steering coupler (also known as the steering shaft coupling or universal joint) that connects the steering column to the steering rack on the 2024 Rivian EDV 500.
Warnings
⚠️The Rivian EDV 500 is a high-voltage electric vehicle. Ensure the vehicle is powered down completely and the 12V battery is disconnected before beginning work.
⚠Do not rotate the steering wheel once the coupler is disconnected, as this can damage the clockspring and airbag system.
⚠Mark all alignment positions before disassembly to ensure proper steering wheel centering upon reassembly.
ℹ️This vehicle uses electric power steering with no fluid, so no fluid service is required during this procedure.

Parts
- Steering coupler assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Steering coupler bolts × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Steering coupler grease (if applicable) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on a level surface and apply parking brake securely
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Ensure vehicle is powered off and key fob is at least 10 feet away from vehicle
- Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and wait 5 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Center the steering wheel and install a steering wheel holding device to prevent rotation
- Raise front of vehicle using appropriate jack points and support with jack stands
- Remove front wheels to access steering components if needed for clearance
Procedure
- 1Access the steering coupler areaFrom inside the vehicle, remove the lower dash panel below the steering column by removing the retaining fasteners. Carefully pull the panel away to expose the steering column shaft and coupler connection point. You may need to remove additional trim pieces for full access depending on configuration.
- 2Mark alignment positionsUsing a paint marker or scribe, make clear alignment marks on the steering shaft, the coupler, and the steering rack input shaft. Mark both the rotational alignment and the insertion depth. Take photos for reference. This is critical for maintaining proper steering wheel center position.
- 3Access coupler from below vehicleWorking from underneath the vehicle on jack stands, locate the steering coupler where the steering column shaft meets the steering rack input shaft. This is typically located near the firewall area. Remove any heat shields, protective covers, or underbody panels that obstruct access to the coupler bolts.
- 4Apply penetrating lubricantSpray penetrating lubricant on all coupler bolt threads and allow to soak for 10-15 minutes. This will help prevent bolt breakage during removal, especially on the pinch bolt that clamps the coupler to the shaft.
- 5Remove upper coupler pinch boltLocate the upper pinch bolt that secures the coupler to the steering column shaft. Using the appropriate metric socket, loosen and remove this bolt completely. The coupler should remain in place on the shaft but will be loose. Note the bolt orientation and any spacers or washers.
- 6Remove lower coupler pinch boltLocate the lower pinch bolt that secures the coupler to the steering rack input shaft. Using the appropriate metric socket, loosen and remove this bolt completely. Be prepared to support the coupler as you remove the bolt.
- 7Separate and remove the steering couplerCarefully slide the coupler off the steering column shaft and steering rack input shaft. You may need to use a flathead screwdriver or small pry bar to gently spread the pinch clamp areas. Work slowly to avoid damaging the shaft splines. Remove the coupler from the vehicle.
- 8Inspect shafts and clean mating surfacesInspect the steering column shaft and steering rack input shaft for damage, wear, rust, or burrs. Use a wire brush to clean the spline surfaces. Check for any play or damage in the steering column bearing or rack mounting. Replace any damaged components before proceeding.
- 9Install new steering couplerPosition the new steering coupler onto the steering rack input shaft first, aligning with your reference marks. Slide the coupler onto the shaft to the marked depth. Then slide the upper portion onto the steering column shaft, again aligning with your marks. Ensure both connections are fully seated on their splines.
- 10Install and tighten coupler boltsInstall the lower pinch bolt first, threading it by hand to ensure proper engagement. Then install the upper pinch bolt. Tighten both bolts to manufacturer specifications using a torque wrench. Since specific torque values are not provided in the database, refer to the factory service manual or consult a Rivian service bulletin for the exact specification, typically in the range of 18-25 ft-lbs for similar couplers.
- 11Verify alignment and freedom of movementVerify that all alignment marks are properly matched. Remove the steering wheel holder and carefully rotate the steering wheel through its full range of motion to ensure smooth operation with no binding or unusual resistance. The steering should turn freely with the vehicle on jack stands.
- 12Reinstall protective covers and panelsReinstall all heat shields, protective covers, and underbody panels that were removed for access. Reinstall the lower dash panel inside the vehicle, ensuring all clips and fasteners are properly secured.
Reassembly
- Reinstall front wheels and torque lug nuts to Rivian specification
- Lower vehicle from jack stands safely
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal
- Power on the vehicle and verify all electrical systems function normally
- Check for any steering-related warning lights or messages on the instrument cluster
Verification
- Start the vehicle and verify electric power steering operates normally without warning lights
- With vehicle stationary, turn steering wheel lock-to-lock and verify smooth operation with no binding, clicking, or unusual noises
- Verify steering wheel is properly centered when front wheels are pointing straight ahead
- Perform a low-speed test drive in a safe area to confirm proper steering response and centering
- Check for any vibrations, play, or unusual feedback through the steering wheel during operation
- If steering wheel is off-center after coupler replacement, a professional wheel alignment and steering angle sensor calibration may be required
