This procedure covers the removal and replacement of tail light bulbs on the 2024 Rivian EDV 500 commercial electric delivery van, requiring access through the rear cargo area.
Warnings
⚠The Rivian EDV 500 uses LED lighting systems that may be integrated modules rather than traditional replaceable bulbs. Verify your specific tail light configuration before beginning work.
⚠Disconnect the 12V battery before performing any electrical work to prevent module damage or system faults.
ℹ️This vehicle has advanced lighting control modules that may require recalibration or fault code clearing after bulb replacement.

Parts
- Tail light bulb assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification - LED module may not be serviceable separately
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn off all vehicle systems and remove key fob from vehicle interior
- Open rear cargo doors to access interior tail light mounting points
- Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery (located under driver seat or in rear cargo area per service manual)
- Wait 5 minutes for vehicle electrical systems to fully power down
- Identify which tail light assembly requires service (left or right)
- Photograph existing wiring connections for reference during reassembly
Procedure
- 1Remove interior cargo area trim panelsFrom inside the cargo area, locate the interior trim panel covering the tail light assembly mounting area. Use panel trim removal tools to carefully release the retaining clips starting from the bottom edge and working upward. Remove the panel and set aside in a safe location to avoid damage.
- 2Disconnect tail light wiring harnessLocate the tail light wiring harness connector behind the trim panel. Press the locking tab on the connector and gently pull apart the connector halves. If connector is difficult to access, it may be necessary to remove additional fasteners or routing clips. Note the connector orientation for reassembly.
- 3Remove tail light assembly mounting fastenersIdentify the tail light assembly mounting fasteners, typically 3-4 Torx T20 or 10mm bolts accessible from the interior cargo area. Remove all fasteners and keep them organized. Note that some fasteners may have sealing washers that must be reused.
- 4Extract tail light assembly from exteriorMove to the exterior of the vehicle. Carefully pull the tail light assembly straight back from the vehicle body. The assembly may have alignment pins or weather seals that provide resistance. Do not pry against painted surfaces. If assembly does not release easily, verify all mounting fasteners have been removed from the interior.
- 5Assess bulb or LED module configurationWith the tail light assembly removed, inspect the rear of the housing. The Rivian EDV 500 likely uses integrated LED modules rather than traditional bulbs. If LEDs are integrated into the housing, the entire assembly may need replacement. If separate bulb sockets are present, rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and remove from housing.
- 6Remove and replace bulb or LED moduleIf serviceable bulbs are present, grasp the bulb and pull straight out from the socket without twisting. Avoid touching the glass of new bulbs with bare hands as oils can cause premature failure. If the assembly uses LED modules, proceed with replacing the entire tail light assembly. Install new bulb by pushing straight into socket until fully seated.
- 7Clean and inspect tail light housingBefore reinstallation, inspect the tail light housing for cracks, moisture intrusion, or damaged seals. Clean the mounting surface and lens using appropriate plastic-safe cleaner. Inspect the wiring harness for any signs of corrosion, chafing, or damage. Use electrical contact cleaner on connector terminals if any corrosion is present.
- 8Reinstall tail light assemblyPosition the tail light assembly with alignment pins properly oriented. Press firmly into the body opening ensuring weather seals are properly seated. From the interior, start all mounting fasteners by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten in a cross-pattern to ensure even sealing pressure. Verify the assembly is flush with the vehicle body exterior.
- 9Reconnect wiring harnessReconnect the tail light wiring harness connector, ensuring it clicks into place with the locking tab fully engaged. Gently tug on the connection to verify it is secure. Route any wiring back to its original position and secure with any clips that were removed.
- 10Reinstall interior trim panelsPosition the interior cargo area trim panel and align all mounting points. Press firmly on clip locations to seat the panel retainers. Verify the panel is flush and all edges are properly secured. Check that no gaps exist that could allow moisture intrusion.
- 11Reconnect 12V battery and initialize systemsReconnect the 12V auxiliary battery following proper terminal connection sequence (positive first, then negative). Close all cargo doors. Turn vehicle to ON position and allow the vehicle systems to initialize. This may take 1-2 minutes as the Rivian EDV 500 performs system checks.
Reassembly
- Ensure all interior trim panels are fully seated with no loose clips or gaps
- Verify tail light assembly is flush with body panel and weather seals are properly positioned
- Confirm wiring harness connectors are fully engaged and locked
- Check that no tools or parts have been left in the cargo area
Verification
- Turn on headlight switch and verify tail lights illuminate properly
- Test brake lights by pressing brake pedal while observing rear lights
- Activate turn signals and verify proper operation of replaced tail light
- Test reverse lights by shifting into reverse gear
- Check vehicle instrument cluster for any warning lights or fault codes related to lighting systems
- Use Rivian service mode or OBD-II scanner to clear any stored fault codes if necessary
- Perform a visual inspection from 20 feet behind vehicle to confirm proper light output and alignment
- Test seal integrity by spraying water on tail light assembly and checking for interior moisture intrusion
