This procedure replaces the ignition coils on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry 2.5L I4 engine. Note: This engine uses a coil-on-plug ignition system and does not have traditional spark plug wires.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting work. Hot components can cause burns.
ℹ️The 2018-2024 Camry 2.5L I4 uses a coil-on-plug system without traditional spark plug wires. This procedure covers ignition coil and spark plug replacement.
⚠Never disconnect ignition coils with engine running. This can damage the ignition system and ECU.

Parts
- Spark plugs (4) × 4 — 90919-01276 or NGK LKAR8A-9
- Ignition coils (if replacing) × 4 — 90919-02267
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for capacitors to discharge
Procedure
- 1Remove engine coverGrasp the engine cover firmly and pull upward to release the plastic clips. The cover is held by push-clips only and does not require tools. Set aside in a clean area.
- 2Disconnect ignition coil electrical connectorsLocate all four ignition coils positioned directly on top of the spark plugs. Press the release tab on each coil electrical connector and pull straight up to disconnect. Mark or remember the cylinder position if coils are being reused.
- 3Remove ignition coil boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing each ignition coil. Store bolts in a clean container to prevent loss. Note that cylinders 1 and 4 may have slightly restricted access.Torque specIgnition Coil Bolt11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 4Extract ignition coilsFirmly grasp each ignition coil and pull straight up with a twisting motion to break the seal. The coil boot may stick to the spark plug due to heat cycling. Do not pry against the coil body as this can crack it. Inspect coil boots for cracks, carbon tracking, or oil contamination.
- 5Clean spark plug wellsUse compressed air or a shop vacuum to remove any debris, dirt, or oil from the spark plug wells. This is critical to prevent contamination from falling into the cylinders when spark plugs are removed. Inspect for oil accumulation which may indicate valve cover gasket failure.⚠Do not allow debris to fall into the cylinder when spark plugs are removed. Foreign material can cause catastrophic engine damage.
- 6Remove spark plugsUsing a spark plug socket with extension, carefully loosen each spark plug by turning counterclockwise. Once loose, unthread by hand to prevent cross-threading. Remove all four spark plugs and inspect electrodes for wear, carbon buildup, or unusual deposits. Normal electrodes should be light tan to gray.
- 7Gap and prepare new spark plugsVerify the spark plug gap on all new plugs using a gap tool. Correct gap is 0.043 inches (1.1mm). Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads only, avoiding the electrode end. Do not over-apply as excess can foul the plug or enter the combustion chamber.⚠Never use anti-seize on the electrode end of the spark plug. Keep anti-seize away from the center electrode and insulator.Torque specSpark Plug20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 8Install new spark plugsThread each spark plug by hand into the cylinder head, turning clockwise. Thread at least 3-4 full turns by hand to ensure proper seating and prevent cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use the torque wrench and spark plug socket to tighten to specification. Work in sequence from cylinder 1 to 4.Torque specSpark Plug20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 9Prepare ignition coils for installationApply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the inside of each coil boot where it contacts the spark plug. This prevents moisture intrusion and makes future removal easier. Inspect coil boots for any cracks or damage before installation.
- 10Install ignition coilsAlign each ignition coil with its corresponding spark plug and push down firmly until the coil seats fully on the valve cover. The boot should engage the spark plug terminal completely. Install the 10mm mounting bolt for each coil and tighten to specification using the torque wrench.Torque specIgnition Coil Bolt11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorsPush each ignition coil electrical connector onto its corresponding coil until you hear and feel a positive click. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated and locked in place.
- 12Reinstall engine cover and reconnect batteryAlign the engine cover with the mounting clips on the valve cover and push down firmly until all clips engage with an audible snap. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes if a scan tool is available.
Reassembly
- Ensure all four ignition coil connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify engine cover is properly clipped in place with no gaps
- Double-check that no tools or parts were left in the engine bay
Verification
- Start the engine and verify it starts smoothly without misfires or rough idle
- Listen for any unusual sounds such as ticking or arcing noises from the ignition system
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify smooth acceleration with no hesitation
- Check for diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner if available
- Test drive vehicle to confirm normal engine performance under load
