The 2011 Avalanche is GMT900 platform sharing DNA with Tahoe/Suburban/Silverado. Generally solid trucks, but AFM (Active Fuel Management) engine failures and transmission cooling issues can cost you big if neglected.
Symptoms: ticking/tapping noise on cold start that may disappear when warm, check engine light with misfire codes (P0300 series), dead cylinder on bank with AFM active, metal shavings in oil
Fix: AFM lifters fail, wiping cam lobes and requiring full lifter/camshaft replacement. Often cascades into piston/ring damage if metal circulates. Budget 18-25 hours for cam/lifter job, 40+ hours if short block needed. Many techs disable AFM with tuner after repair to prevent repeat failure.
Estimated cost: $3,500-8,000
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks & Internal Cooler Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: transmission fluid dripping near radiator, pink milkshake in coolant overflow, erratic shifting or slipping after coolant contamination, sudden transmission failure
Fix: External cooler lines rust through at crimps, or internal radiator cooler fails mixing ATF and coolant. External lines are 2-3 hours, but internal failure requires radiator replacement, full trans flush, and often transmission rebuild if contamination occurred. Replace both external lines and upgrade to external cooler even if only one side leaks.
Estimated cost: $400-800 (lines only), $3,500-5,500 (with trans rebuild)
Excessive Oil Consumption (Piston Ring Failure)
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 100,000-180,000 mi
Symptoms: burning 1+ quart per 1,000 miles, blue smoke on acceleration, carbon buildup on spark plugs, fouled plugs causing misfires
Fix: AFM-related wear causes ring land collapse or stuck oil control rings. Requires engine teardown with new pistons and rings minimum. Many shops recommend short block replacement at this point (35-45 hours). Carbon cleaning attempts rarely work long-term once consumption exceeds 1qt/1,000mi.
Symptoms: stabilitrak warning light, ABS activating on dry pavement at low speed, service stabilitrak message, traction control randomly cutting power
Fix: Wheel speed sensors corrode or tone rings rust causing erratic readings. Front sensors 1.5 hours each, rears 2 hours each due to access. Scan for codes to identify which corner. Sometimes cleaning tone ring works temporarily, but sensors typically need replacement.
Estimated cost: $250-450 per corner
Reduced Engine Power Mode (Throttle Body/APP Sensor)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: reduced engine power warning, engine limited to 2,000 RPM, limp mode with no throttle response, codes P2135 or P2138
Fix: Throttle body carbon buildup or accelerator pedal position sensor failure. Throttle body cleaning is 1 hour and works 40% of time. Otherwise throttle body replacement 2 hours or pedal sensor 1.5 hours. This platform requires GM relearn procedure after replacement.
Estimated cost: $150-800
Air Conditioning Evaporator Core Leak
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: refrigerant loss requiring annual recharge, no cold air, oily residue on passenger footwell carpet, sweet smell from vents
Fix: Evaporator corrodes from inside. Requires full dash removal at 12-16 hours labor. Part is cheap but labor kills you. Many owners live with annual recharges until other repairs justify the dash-out time.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,000
Fuel Pump Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: extended crank time when hot, stalling after driving then restarting, fuel pressure dropping under load, no start when tank below 1/4
Fix: In-tank pump wears out, made worse by running low on fuel frequently. Requires dropping 31-gallon tank (3-4 hours). Replace whole assembly not just pump. If pump failed from contamination, also replace fuel filter which is buried in frame rail (add 1.5 hours).
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Owner tips
Disable AFM with Range Technology module or tune immediately — $500 prevention vs $8,000 engine rebuild
Change transmission fluid every 50k with full synthetic, add external cooler if towing regularly
Check oil level every fuel fill — these engines will grenade themselves with zero warning when low
Inspect transmission cooler lines annually for rust — replace at first sign of surface corrosion
Keep fuel tank above 1/4 to extend fuel pump life, use Top Tier gas to reduce carbon buildup
Capable truck but AFM is a ticking time bomb — budget $4k-8k for eventual engine work or disable it preemptively; otherwise solid if maintained.

Additionally, GM is recalling certain 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in the states of Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia or "Zone B."
These vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated passenger frontal inflators containing phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on February 22, 2021. Second notification letters will be mailed once the remedy is available. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 1, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020; Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006; and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212328760.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado HD, Silverado LD, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra LD, Sierra HD, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the ignition lock actuator may bind, making turning the key difficult or causing the ignition to get stuck in the "Start" position.
Consequence: If stuck in the "Start" position, the ignition may suddenly snap back into the "Accessory" position, causing a loss of engine, steering, and braking power, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. If the vehicle is in a crash, the air bags may not deploy, increasing the risk of occupant injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the ignition lock housing, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on February 12, 2015. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM's number for this recall is 14696 for the original equipment, and 14912 for the service replacement parts.
