The E90 328i with N52 inline-six is a solid daily driver marred by a few expensive failure points. The engine itself is generally reliable, but cooling system plastics, oil leaks, and a catastrophic valve cover defect make preventive maintenance critical.
Valve Cover / PCV Diaphragm Failure Leading to Oil Consumption
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000 mi or worse), Rough idle or hesitation, Check engine light with lean codes (P0171/P0174), Oil pooling in spark plug wells
Fix: Replace valve cover with updated design, PCV diaphragm, valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals. 4-6 hours labor. This is THE defining problem of the N52 and must be addressed before it starves the engine of oil.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Water Pump and Thermostat Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Coolant leak at front of engine, Overheating or temperature fluctuations, Coolant warning light, Electric water pump noise or failure to prime
Fix: Replace electric water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, and all cooling hoses as preventive measure. Plastic impellers fail without warning. 4-5 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $1,200-1,800
Oil Filter Housing Gasket Leak
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Oil leak at front-passenger side of engine, Oil dripping onto starter or subframe, Oil smell in cabin when heater is on
Fix: Replace oil filter housing gaskets (upper and lower). Common leak point on all N52 engines. 2-3 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $400-700
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Failure (GM 6-Speed Auto)
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid leaking at radiator, Pink or red fluid under car, Transmission slipping or delayed engagement, Coolant contamination with ATF (milky fluid)
Fix: Replace transmission cooler lines and flush both cooling system and transmission if cross-contamination occurred. If coolant entered trans, rebuild required. 3-4 hours for lines only, 15-20 hours if trans rebuild needed.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000 (lines only), $3,500-5,500 (with trans rebuild)
Electric Power Steering Pump Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Heavy steering at low speeds, Steering warning light, Intermittent loss of power assist, Whining noise from steering pump area
Fix: Replace electric power steering pump. Common failure on E90 chassis. 2-3 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Front Control Arm Bushing Wear
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 70,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking over bumps, Steering wander or vague feel, Uneven tire wear, Failed alignment adjustments
Fix: Replace front lower control arms (BMW does not sell bushings separately). 2-3 hours for both sides plus alignment.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000
VANOS Solenoid Rattle and Timing Issues
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Cold-start rattle for 2-3 seconds, Loss of power at mid-range RPM, Check engine light with VANOS codes, Rough idle when warm
Fix: Replace VANOS solenoids (intake and exhaust). Use OEM or high-quality aftermarket only. 3-4 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $600-1,100
Owner tips
Replace the valve cover and PCV system preemptively at 80,000 mi — this prevents catastrophic oil starvation
Do the entire cooling system as a package (pump, thermostat, hoses, expansion tank) at first sign of trouble
Use BMW-spec fluids only; the N52 is sensitive to oil viscosity and coolant chemistry
Check transmission cooler lines annually on high-mileage cars — catching this early saves $4,000
Buy one if the valve cover and cooling system have been done recently and you have $2,000 cushion for deferred maintenance — skip it if service history is unknown.

BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through September 2011; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March 2009 through June 2011. In February 2013, BMW recalled 504,545 vehicles. In July 2013, BMW informed the agency that it was adding 1-Series, 3-Series, and Z4 vehicles, representing an additional 12,094 vehicles. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 516,791. The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle.
Consequence: If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge. The recall began on March 13, 2013. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].
