The 2014 Cruze is a solid commuter when maintained, but the 1.4T suffers catastrophic turbo coolant leaks that destroy engines, the 6T40 automatic has chronic valve body and cooler failures, and multiple electrical gremlins plague the platform as it ages.
Turbo Coolant Valve / PCV System Failure Leading to Engine Damage (1.4T)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust on cold start, Coolant loss with no visible leaks, Oil dilution / milky oil cap residue, Check engine light for lean/rich codes, Catastrophic bearing failure if ignored
Fix: The turbo coolant return valve fails and allows coolant into the intake, overwhelming the PCV system and washing cylinder walls. Early catch requires valve and PCV update (3-4 hrs labor). Late catch needs complete engine rebuild or replacement (18-25 hrs labor). GM finally issued TSB PIP5324D but damage is often done before diagnosis.
Estimated cost: $400-800 for valve/PCV; $4,500-7,500 for engine replacement with used/reman unit
6T40 Transmission Valve Body and Oil Cooler Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Harsh 2-3 or 3-4 shifts, especially when cold, Shuddering or slipping on acceleration, Transmission overheating warnings, Check engine light with P0010, P0776, or shift solenoid codes, Loss of reverse or limp mode
Fix: The pressure control solenoid and valve body wear, causing erratic shifts. The internal oil cooler also fails, mixing coolant and ATF. Requires valve body replacement (8-10 hrs) and often cooler bypass or external cooler install (add 2-3 hrs). Some need full rebuilds if coolant contamination occurred.
Estimated cost: $1,800-2,800 for valve body/cooler; $3,500-5,000 for rebuild
Water Pump Failure (1.4T)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Coolant leak from front of engine, Squealing or grinding noise on cold start, Overheating in traffic or at idle, Visible coolant puddle under front passenger side
Fix: The plastic impeller water pump fails prematurely on the 1.4T. It's buried behind the timing cover, requiring belt, tensioner, and partial front cover removal. 4-5 hours labor. Always replace thermostat housing and coolant outlet while in there — they're plastic and crack next.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000
Intake Manifold and Purge Valve Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Rough idle and stumbling on acceleration, Check engine light for P0171, P0174 (lean codes), P0496, P0449 (EVAP codes), Whistling or hissing from engine bay
Fix: The plastic intake manifold develops vacuum leaks at seams and the purge valve diaphragm tears. Smoke test confirms location. Manifold replacement is 2-3 hrs; purge valve is 0.5 hr but often both fail together. Updated metal-reinforced manifolds available from aftermarket.
Estimated cost: $400-700 for manifold; $120-180 for purge valve alone
Electronic Throttle Body Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Reduced engine power warning, Limp mode limiting speed to 30-40 mph, P2135 (throttle position sensor correlation) code, Intermittent stalling at idle
Fix: The throttle body position sensors fail or the motor sticks. Cleaning rarely works long-term. Replacement requires relearn procedure with Tech2 or equivalent scan tool. 1.5-2 hrs labor. OE units are $350-500; aftermarket $150-250 but quality varies.
Estimated cost: $400-700
Front Axle Seal and Intermediate Shaft Bearing Failure
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking from front end on acceleration/deceleration, Transmission fluid leak from passenger side of transaxle, Vibration under load between 30-50 mph
Fix: The intermediate shaft support bearing wears and the front axle seals leak. Multiple NHTSA recalls addressed early failures but wear continues. Seal replacement is 2-3 hrs per side; intermediate shaft bearing adds 1-2 hrs. Often done together when transmission is already being serviced.
Estimated cost: $350-600 for seals; $500-800 with intermediate shaft bearing
Steering Gear Clunk and Power Steering Leaks
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk or knock when turning at low speed or parking, Power steering fluid leak from rack boots, Heavy steering feel intermittently, Groaning noise on full lock
Fix: The electric power steering gear develops internal play and the hydraulic lines/rack seals leak. Some units covered under extended warranty or recall 14V394. Rack replacement is 4-5 hrs labor. Many owners opt for aftermarket racks due to OE cost, but quality is hit-or-miss.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Owner tips
Change transmission fluid every 40-50k mi regardless of GM's 'lifetime' claim — valve body lives depend on it
Inspect turbo coolant lines and PCV valve annually on 1.4T; catch it early or buy a new engine
Use only Dexcool coolant and distilled water; the 1.4T is extremely sensitive to corrosion
Budget $1,500/year in deferred maintenance for any Cruze over 80k mi — they nickel-and-dime you
Buy the 1.8L manual if you must; avoid the 1.4T automatic unless you have full service records proving the turbo coolant valve and transmission were already addressed — these are $5k+ ticking time bombs.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Buick Regal, LaCrosse, Verano, and Enclave, and Chevrolet Impala, Malibu, Cruze, and Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjuster may disengage from the transmission shift lever. As such, these vehicles do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect." They also fail to conform to FMVSS number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
Consequence: If a vehicle's shift cable disengages from the transmission shift lever, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the driver may be able to shift the lever to the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjusters, free of charge. The recall began on April 10, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Buick owners at 1-800-521-7300, and GMC owners at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors' number associated with this recall is 14048.
