The 2003 CR-V with the K24 engine is generally a solid compact SUV, but this generation suffers from chronic automatic transmission failures and a catastrophic engine defect that can grenade motors without warning. These two issues dominate the reliability conversation.
Automatic Transmission Premature Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Harsh shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear, especially when cold, Slipping under acceleration or complete loss of forward gears, Metal shavings in transmission fluid during service, Delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive
Fix: The 5-speed automatic in this generation has weak clutch packs and inadequate fluid cooling. Transmission rebuild takes 12-16 hours; most shops recommend replacement with a remanufactured unit (8-10 hours). Cooler line replacement is often needed simultaneously. Regular fluid changes every 30k miles can extend life but won't prevent failure.
Estimated cost: $2,800-4,500
Catastrophic Piston Ring Failure and Engine Seizure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 100,000-180,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1 quart per 1,000 miles or worse), Blue smoke from exhaust on startup or acceleration, Complete engine seizure without warning in severe cases, Loss of compression and cylinder scoring visible on borescope
Fix: The K24A1 engine has a defective piston ring design that leads to oil burning and eventual ring land failure. When rings fail completely, metal debris circulates and destroys bearings. Fix requires complete engine rebuild (25-30 hours) or short block replacement (18-22 hours). Many owners discover this after catastrophic failure on the highway.
Estimated cost: $4,500-7,000
Front Lower Control Arm Bushing Deterioration
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking noise over bumps from front end, Steering wander and poor highway tracking, Uneven tire wear on inside edges, Visible cracking or tearing of rubber bushings during inspection
Fix: The front lower control arm compliance bushings rot out prematurely. Honda doesn't sell bushings separately—you must replace entire control arms. Both sides should be done together. 2.5-3.5 hours labor for both sides plus alignment (1 hour).
Estimated cost: $600-900
Rear Differential Fluid Contamination and Bearing Noise
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Whining or growling noise from rear that increases with speed, Vibration during acceleration in AWD models, Milky or metallic-contaminated fluid during service, Binding sensation in tight turns
Fix: The rear differential often runs low on fluid due to neglected maintenance (30k mile service interval commonly skipped). Once bearings are damaged, the diff requires rebuild or replacement. Drain-and-fill service is 0.5 hours; full rebuild is 6-8 hours. Catch it early with fluid changes and you avoid the big bill.
Estimated cost: $200-400 for service, $1,800-2,800 for rebuild
Power Window Master Switch Failure
Common · low severity
Symptoms: Driver's window won't operate from master switch but works from door switch, Intermittent operation of multiple windows, Switch buttons feel spongy or unresponsive, Complete failure of all window controls from driver's door
Fix: The driver's master window switch assembly fails due to worn contacts and poor solder joints. This was subject to a recall but many vehicles never got the fix. Replacement is straightforward: 0.5-1.0 hours to remove door panel and swap switch assembly.
Estimated cost: $150-300
Exhaust System Rot and Catalytic Converter Failure
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 120,000-180,000 mi
Symptoms: Check engine light with P0420 catalyst efficiency code, Rattling noise from underneath vehicle, Visible rust-through holes in muffler or pipes, Failed emissions testing
Fix: Exhaust systems rust from the inside out, especially in salt-belt states. The catalytic converter can fail internally from the oil consumption issue mentioned earlier. Cat replacement is 2-3 hours; full exhaust system from cat-back is 2.5-3.5 hours. OEM cats are expensive; quality aftermarket options available.
Estimated cost: $800-1,800
Owner tips
Change automatic transmission fluid every 30,000 miles with Honda DW-1 fluid—this is critical and often neglected
Monitor oil consumption religiously; if burning more than 1 quart between changes, budget for engine work
Service rear differential every 30,000 miles to prevent bearing damage
Inspect lower control arm bushings annually after 60k miles
Check for open recalls, especially the Takata airbag inflator recall—these can be lethal
Buy only if transmission and engine have been recently rebuilt or if you're getting it cheap enough to budget $5,000-8,000 for inevitable powertrain work—the K24 piston ring defect and transmission fragility make this generation a gamble.

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002 THROUGH 2004 CR-V; MODEL YEAR 2003 THROUGH 2005 PILOT; AND MODEL YEAR 2002 AND 2003 CIVIC VEHICLES. IN MARCH 2012, HONDA FILED A DEFECT REPORT TO RECALL CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002 THROUGH 2004 CR-V AND CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2003 PILOT VEHICLES. IN AUGUST 2012, HONDA INFORMED THE AGENCY THAT IT WAS INCLUDING AN ADDITIONAL 820,789 VEHICLES INCLUDING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AND 2005 PILOTS AND MODEL YEAR 2002 AND 2003 CIVICS. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF VEHICLES BEING RECALLED IS NOW 1,375,217. DUE TO TENSION FROM THE COMBINATION SWITCH WIRING HARNESS, WEAR ON THE SURFACE OF THE ELECTRICAL TERMINAL CAN OCCUR, YIELDING COPPER OXIDE, WHICH INCREASES ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE. INCREASED ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE MAY CAUSE THE TERMINAL ENDS TO MELT WITHIN THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR.
Consequence: IF THE TERMINAL ENDS MELT WITHIN THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR, THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS MAY BECOME INOPERATIVE, REDUCING DRIVER VISIBILITY AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy: HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE LOW BEAM TERMINAL HARNESS OR REPLACE THE LIGHTING SWITCH AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE ORIGINAL RECALL BEGAN IN APRIL 2012. OWNERS OF VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THE SEPTEMBER 2012 EXPANSION WILL BE NOTIFIED IN SEPTEMBER 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.
