Wiring

Bank 1: Tan/Orange (signal), Black (ground), Orange/White (12V supply); Bank 2: Light Blue/Red (signal), Black (ground), Orange/White (12V supply)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.2V to 5V
At Higher RPM
0.2V to 5V

Expected Pattern

3 evenly-spaced pulses per camshaft revolution, square wave pattern switching between 0.2V and 5V, runs at half crankshaft speed

Known-Good Waveform

Clean digital square wave with three distinct pulses per camshaft revolution at approximately 8-9Hz at idle. Signal should maintain sharp rising and falling edges between 0.2V and 5V. Correlation between camshaft and crankshaft sensors must show proper timing alignment; PCM expects cam signal at specific crankshaft positions.

Common Failure Patterns

Loss of signal or intermittent dropout during engine operation, especially when engine is at operating temperature
Cause: Sensor heat soak from valve cover area, internal Hall effect IC failure, or oil intrusion into connector from valve cover gasket leaks
Related DTCs: P0340, P0341, P0345, P0346
Signal present but timing correlation errors between cam and crank sensors
Cause: Timing chain stretch (common on high-mileage EcoBoost engines), cam phaser failure, or jumped timing chain due to worn guides
Related DTCs: P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019

Diagnostic Tips

EcoBoost engines are known for timing chain stretch after 100k miles; verify cam/crank correlation. Check for oil consumption issues as cam phasers require proper oil pressure. These sensors are highly sensitive to valve cover gasket leaks allowing oil into connectors.
