Wiring

Brown/White (12V power), Black/White (ground), and Gray/Orange (signal)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.2V to 5V
At Higher RPM
0.2V to 5V

Expected Pattern

Multiple square wave pulses per camshaft revolution, switching cleanly between 0.2V (low) and 5.0V (high) with variable pulse widths for cylinder identification

Known-Good Waveform

Expect clean digital square wave transitions with sharp rising and falling edges between 0.2V and 5.0V. The Coyote uses a unique pattern per camshaft revolution for cylinder identification, with varying pulse widths. At idle (700 RPM), the camshaft rotates at half crankshaft speed, producing approximately 12 Hz base frequency with the characteristic Ford variable-width pulse pattern.

Common Failure Patterns

Slow rise/fall times, rounded edges, or voltage levels not reaching proper high (above 4.5V) or low (below 0.5V) states
Cause: Weak sensor output due to internal Hall-effect IC failure or low supply voltage from wiring resistance
Related DTCs: P0340, P0341, P0345, P0346
Intermittent signal dropout or missing pulses
Cause: Timing chain stretch affecting sensor-to-wheel air gap, worn cam phaser, or loose sensor mounting
Related DTCs: P0340, P0016, P0017
No signal or constant high/low voltage
Cause: Failed Hall-effect sensor, open/shorted wiring, or loss of power/ground at connector
Related DTCs: P0340, P0345

Diagnostic Tips

The Coyote's Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) system means cam timing correlation codes (P0016/P0017) are common; verify actual mechanical timing before replacing sensors. Always check all four cam sensors when diagnosing correlation faults.
