Wiring

Gray/Red (MAF signal to PCM), Red/Light Blue or Pink (12V power), Black or Black/White (sensor ground), Light Green/White or Tan/Light Blue (intake air temperature signal)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.7V to 1.2V
At Higher RPM
2.5V to 4.5V

Expected Pattern

Smooth DC voltage that increases proportionally with airflow, clean voltage with minimal noise or ripple

Known-Good Waveform

At idle (approximately 800 RPM), MAF voltage should read 0.7-1.2V representing 4-8 g/s airflow. Signal should be smooth and stable with less than 0.05V ripple. During throttle snap from idle to 3000 RPM, voltage should rise smoothly and quickly to 2.5-3.5V, then settle back down proportionally. No sudden spikes, dropouts, or erratic behavior.

Common Failure Patterns

Voltage reads 0.3-0.5V at idle or does not increase smoothly with RPM
Cause: Contaminated MAF sensor element (oil from over-oiled aftermarket air filters is very common), failed sensor element
Related DTCs: P0102, P0171, P0174, P2196, P2198
Voltage reading too high at idle (above 1.5V) or shows excessive ripple/noise
Cause: Vacuum leak downstream of MAF (very common on intake manifold gaskets), cracked air intake tube allowing unmetered air
Related DTCs: P0101, P0171, P0174
Flat voltage reading around 0.4-0.5V regardless of engine RPM
Cause: Failed MAF sensor, broken signal wire, or corroded connector pins
Related DTCs: P0102, P0103

Diagnostic Tips

Ford uses hot-wire MAF sensors that are very sensitive to contamination. Never touch the sensor element. Verify no air leaks between MAF and throttle body. Compare MAF voltage to calculated airflow in scan tool (should correlate). K&N or similar oiled filters are a leading cause of MAF failure on this engine.
