Expected Pattern
Steady DC voltage inversely proportional to intake air temperature, negative temperature coefficient thermistor
Known-Good Waveform
At ambient temperature of 68°F, sensor should read 2.5-3.0V with engine off. After extended idle or driving, voltage drops to 1.5-2.5V as underhood temperatures rise. Voltage should be stable without fluctuations greater than 0.1V over 30 seconds.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage fixed at 4.9-5.0V
Cause: Open circuit in IAT portion of MAF sensor or broken wire in harness
Reading shows -40°F or voltage near 5V constantly
Cause: Carbon buildup on IAT element within MAF housing affecting heat dissipation

Erratic voltage fluctuations during acceleration
Cause: Loose MAF connector or corroded pins in 6-pin connector

Diagnostic Tips
IAT is integral to the MAF sensor on Coyote engines - replacement requires entire MAF assembly. Compare IAT to ECT at cold start for rationality. Check for aftermarket cold air intakes causing MAF contamination issues common on F-150s.
