Intake Air Temperature Sensor
2016 Ford F-150 Β· 3.5L V6 EcoBoost
Sensor Type
thermistor
Waveform Type
dc-variable
Location
Integrated into Mass Air Flow sensor housing, located in air intake tube between air filter box and turbocharger inlet
Pins
2-pin connector
Timebase
2s/div
Voltage Scale
1V/div
Trigger
Auto or DC level
Wiring
Orange/White wire (signal to PCM pin 47) and Gray/Yellow wire (5V reference return)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
1.5V to 3.5V
At Higher RPM
0.8V to 2.5V
Expected Pattern
Steady DC voltage inversely proportional to intake air temperature, decreases with rising temperature
Known-Good Waveform
At ambient temperature (70Β°F), voltage should read 2.5-3.0V. Under boost conditions or heat soak, temperature rises and voltage drops to 1.0-2.0V. Signal should be stable with no more than 0.05V fluctuation at steady state. The sensor responds relatively quickly to temperature changes compared to ECT.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage pegged at 4.8-5.0V continuously
Cause: Open circuit in IAT sensor element or wiring, common failure in MAF housing
Voltage reads 0.1-0.3V regardless of temperature
Cause: Short to ground in sensor or wiring harness
Related DTCs: P0112
Erratic voltage swings between 1V and 4V rapidly
Cause: Contaminated MAF sensor element affecting IAT, oil from aftermarket air filter, or corroded MAF connector pins
Related DTCs: P0111
Diagnostic Tips
On EcoBoost engines, this sensor is integrated into the MAF housing and cannot be serviced separately - the entire MAF assembly must be replaced if IAT fails. Check for oil contamination on the sensor element from over-oiled aftermarket filters, which is extremely common and causes erratic readings.
