Wiring

Gray/Red (MAF signal to PCM), Red/Black (12V power), Black (signal ground), Tan/Light Blue (IAT sensor signal integrated)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.6V to 1.2V
At Higher RPM
3.5V to 4.8V

Expected Pattern

Smooth analog DC voltage that increases linearly with airflow, no oscillations or steps

Known-Good Waveform

At idle (hot engine, Park), voltage should read 0.6-1.2V corresponding to 3-8 g/s airflow. Signal should be smooth and stable with no fluctuations greater than 0.05V. During snap throttle, voltage should rise smoothly to 3.5-4.8V without hesitation, dropout, or noise.

Common Failure Patterns

Signal frozen at one voltage or reading below 0.4V at idle
Cause: Contaminated hot wire element from oil vapors or dirt, or complete MAF sensor failure
Related DTCs: P0102, P0103, P0104
Erratic voltage fluctuations or noise on signal line
Cause: Damaged MAF sensor wiring, poor ground connection, or electromagnetic interference from aftermarket accessories
Related DTCs: P0104, P0171, P0174
Signal voltage higher than expected at idle (over 1.5V)
Cause: Vacuum leak downstream of MAF causing unmetered air, or MAF sensor reading high due to internal fault
Related DTCs: P0171, P0174

Diagnostic Tips

Ford uses hot-wire MAF sensors susceptible to contamination from oiled aftermarket air filters. Verify no intake leaks between MAF and throttle body. Compare MAF voltage to calculated airflow in PCM data; idle should show 3-8 g/s on a healthy engine.
