Expected Pattern
Smooth DC voltage that increases linearly with airflow, clean transitions during throttle changes, minimal electrical noise
Known-Good Waveform
Hot-wire MAF sensor outputs smooth DC voltage starting at 0.6-1.0V at idle (12-25 g/s airflow) and rising progressively to 3.5-4.8V at wide-open throttle (180-250 g/s). Signal should be extremely clean with less than 50mV ripple. Snap throttle should show smooth, immediate voltage rise proportional to airflow increase with no hesitation or steps in the waveform.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage stuck at 0.9-1.1V regardless of throttle input, no response to airflow changes
Cause: Contaminated MAF sensing element (oil, dirt), broken hot wire, failed MAF sensor electronics
Erratic signal with voltage spikes, excessive ripple (over 100mV), stepped transitions
Cause: Electrical interference from damaged wiring, poor ground connection, failing MAF sensor, air leak after MAF
Diagnostic Tips
EcoBoost turbocharged engines are highly sensitive to MAF accuracy for proper boost control and fuel trim. Never use compressed air to clean MAF element - use only MAF-specific cleaner. Monitor MAF voltage and g/s reading together; at idle should see 12-25 g/s. Oil contamination from aftermarket air filters is extremely common and causes lean codes.
