Expected Pattern

60-2 tooth pattern with two missing teeth before TDC, square wave switching between ~0.3V and ~5V

Known-Good Waveform

Clean square wave transitions between low (0.2-0.4V) and high (4.8-5.2V) with uniform tooth spacing except for the missing tooth gap which should be exactly twice the normal tooth period. At idle (~600-700 RPM), frequency is approximately 50Hz with crisp vertical transitions taking less than 5 microseconds.

Common Failure Patterns

Signal stuck at 5V or 0V with no transitions
Cause: Failed Hall effect sensor element or broken wiring/connector

Intermittent signal dropouts or erratic voltage spikes
Cause: Damaged reluctor wheel teeth from debris ingestion or crankshaft keyway movement

Slow rise/fall times or rounded square waves
Cause: Excessive air gap due to sensor backing out or mounting bracket wear

Diagnostic Tips

EcoBoost engines are known for oil contamination on the CKP sensor causing erratic signals; check connector for oil intrusion. Verify reluctor wheel hasn't shifted on the crankshaft, especially on high-mileage or modified engines with increased boost pressure.
