Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
2.7V to 3.3V
At Higher RPM
1.5V to 4.2V
Expected Pattern
Steady voltage around 3.0V at stoichiometric AFR (14.7:1), voltage decreases to 1.5-2.2V during lean operation, increases to 3.5-4.0V during rich operation
Known-Good Waveform
Air-fuel ratio sensor maintains stable voltage around 3.0V during closed-loop operation at idle with very small oscillations (±0.1V). During acceleration enrichment, voltage smoothly rises to 3.5-4.0V, then returns to 3.0V. During deceleration fuel cut, voltage drops to 1.5-2.0V indicating lean condition. Response time to commanded changes should be under 100ms with no lag or sluggish behavior.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage stuck at or near 3.0V with no response to throttle changes, lazy response
Cause: Contaminated sensing element from oil consumption (common on this engine) or silicone from RTV gasket maker
Voltage reading below 1.0V or above 4.5V constantly, no fluctuation
Cause: Failed sensor element or heater circuit fault, wiring damage from heat near turbo
Diagnostic Tips
This engine has known oil consumption issues that can contaminate the upstream O2 sensor - check for blue smoke and oil level. The pre-turbo location exposes sensor to extreme temperature cycling. Monitor long-term fuel trim; values beyond ±8% suggest sensor degradation even without codes.
