Throttle Position Sensor
2016 Honda Civic Β· 1.5L I4 Turbo
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
dc-variable
Location
Integrated into the electronic throttle body on the intake manifold, non-serviceable separate from throttle body assembly
Pins
6-pin connector
Timebase
500ms/div during throttle sweep
Voltage Scale
1V/div
Trigger
N/A - capture during slow throttle sweep
Wiring
Two independent sensors: Sensor 1 - Red wire (signal), Sensor 2 - Yellow wire (signal), shared Black wire (ground), Black/Yellow wire (5V reference 1), Pink wire (5V reference 2)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0.45V to 0.9V
At Higher RPM
4.2V to 4.7V
Expected Pattern
Two opposing linear voltage ramps: TPS1 increases from ~0.7V to ~4.5V as throttle opens, TPS2 decreases from ~4.3V to ~0.5V inversely
Known-Good Waveform
Dual redundant linear voltage signals that move in opposite directions as throttle opens. At closed throttle (idle), TPS1 should read 0.6-0.8V while TPS2 reads 4.2-4.4V. At wide open throttle, TPS1 should reach 4.3-4.6V while TPS2 drops to 0.5-0.7V. Both sensors must show smooth linear transitions with no steps, flat spots, or noise during a slow throttle sweep from closed to open.
Common Failure Patterns
One sensor voltage becomes erratic, shows flat spots, or deviates from linear ramp during sweep
Cause: Carbon buildup on throttle plate causing binding or internal sensor track wear/contamination
Both sensors show correlation error - voltages don't track inversely or sum to approximately 5V
Cause: Throttle body internal sensor circuit failure requiring throttle body replacement
Diagnostic Tips
The 1.5T engine has known issues with oil dilution entering the intake through the PCV system causing throttle body fouling. Always clean throttle body with proper electronic-safe cleaner and perform throttle relearn procedure using HDS or equivalent. Do not attempt to service TPS separately - it requires complete throttle body replacement.
