Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
2.2V to 3.8V
At Higher RPM
1.8V to 4.2V
Expected Pattern
Steady DC voltage centered around 3.0-3.3V at stoichiometric (14.7:1), rapid response to fuel changes, voltage drops lean (<3.0V) and rises rich (>3.3V)
Known-Good Waveform
Wideband air-fuel ratio sensor maintains relatively steady voltage around 3.0-3.3V during closed-loop operation at idle. Unlike narrow-band sensors, it does not oscillate rapidly but instead provides proportional voltage across full AFR range. Voltage responds quickly (under 100ms) to commanded fuel changes during snap throttle tests. During cold start enrichment, voltage will read higher (3.5-3.8V indicating rich) and stabilize to 3.0-3.3V once entering closed loop.
Common Failure Patterns
Sensor voltage stuck near 3.0V with no response to fuel changes, lazy response time over 300ms, or frozen reading
Cause: Contaminated sensor element from oil consumption or coolant intrusion, aged sensor with reduced sensitivity, or exhaust leak before sensor
Voltage reading constantly lean (below 2.8V) or constantly rich (above 3.6V) with no variation
Cause: Vacuum leak causing lean condition, failed fuel pressure regulator causing rich, or internal sensor circuit failure
Diagnostic Tips
This wideband AFR sensor requires scan tool data to properly interpret - monitor commanded AFR vs actual AFR and fuel trims. Heater circuit draws 6-8 amps; check heater operation with amp clamp. Hyundai 2.5L engines with high oil consumption will contaminate upstream sensor; address root cause before sensor replacement.
