Camshaft Position Sensor
2022 Hyundai Tucson Β· 2.5L I4
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
dc-square
Location
Rear of cylinder head, intake side (Bank 1), mounted in timing chain cover near cam phaser assembly
Pins
3-pin connector
Idle Frequency
16.5 Hz
Timebase
50ms/div
Voltage Scale
2V/div
Trigger
2.5V, rising edge
Wiring
Yellow/Blue (signal), Black (ground), Red/Black stripe (12V supply)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0.3V to 4.7V
At Higher RPM
0.3V to 4.7V
Expected Pattern
Multiple asymmetric pulses per camshaft revolution, variable pulse widths for cylinder identification, 4 distinct pulses per cam revolution on 4-cylinder
Known-Good Waveform
Digital square wave with varying pulse widths for position identification, switching between 0.3V and 4.7V. At 800 RPM idle, cam sensor frequency is half of crank (16.5Hz). Pattern shows distinct varying pulse widths that repeat every two crankshaft revolutions, allowing PCM to identify each cylinder.
Common Failure Patterns
Erratic or missing pulses, inconsistent pulse width patterns, signal noise or glitches during CVVT operation
Cause: Oil contamination on sensor tip from worn CVVT solenoid seals, metallic debris on reluctor wheel from timing chain wear
Diagnostic Tips
The 2.5L Smartstream uses CVVT on intake cam only. Monitor cam sensor signal during CVVT activation to check for timing shifts. Oil consumption issues can cause sensor contamination; check for oil passage blockage at sensor mounting boss.
