Crankshaft Position Sensor
2022 Hyundai Tucson Β· 2.5L I4
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
dc-square
Location
Front of engine block, lower right side near crankshaft pulley, approximately 10 o'clock position when viewing from front
Pins
3-pin connector
Idle Frequency
33 Hz
Timebase
20ms/div
Voltage Scale
2V/div
Trigger
2.5V, rising edge
Wiring
Gray (signal), Black (ground), Red/White stripe (12V supply)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0.2V to 4.8V
At Higher RPM
0.2V to 4.8V
Expected Pattern
60-tooth wheel with 2 missing teeth (60-2), clean square wave transitions between 0V and 5V, gap visible every revolution
Known-Good Waveform
Clean digital square wave alternating between near 0V (0.2V) and near 5V (4.8V) with sharp transitions. At idle (800 RPM), frequency should be approximately 33Hz with consistent pulse width. The missing tooth gap should appear once per crankshaft revolution, showing two consecutive missing pulses clearly.
Common Failure Patterns
Intermittent signal dropout or complete loss of square wave, signal stuck at 0V or 5V
Cause: Internal hall-effect sensor failure, corroded connector pins, or damaged wiring harness where it routes near exhaust manifold
Diagnostic Tips
Hyundai Smartstream engines are sensitive to excessive crankshaft endplay causing sensor gap issues. Check for 0.4-0.6mm air gap between sensor and reluctor wheel. Common connector corrosion due to splash shield damage on AWD models.
