Wiring
Pin 1: Battery positive (12V, typically red/yellow), Pin 2: PCM control ground (black/white or gray)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0V to 14V
At Higher RPM
0V to 14V
Expected Pattern
Square wave with battery voltage during dwell, dropping to near 0V at firing, followed by oscillations during coil discharge
Known-Good Waveform
Battery voltage (13-14V) during dwell time of 3-4ms at idle, followed by sharp drop to near 0V at spark event. After firing, expect 3-5 oscillations (ringing) at 150-250V peak amplitude lasting 1-2ms. Dwell time increases with RPM, and waveform should be consistent across all four cylinders.
Common Failure Patterns
No voltage drop at firing point, constant battery voltage with no oscillations
Cause: Open primary winding in coil or failed PCM driver transistor
Excessive ringing (more than 6 oscillations) or ringing lasting over 3ms
Cause: High secondary resistance due to worn spark plugs or excessive plug gap
Diagnostic Tips
Compare all four cylinders simultaneously using a 4-channel scope. Hyundai Smartstream engines are sensitive to spark plug condition - verify plug gap is 0.039-0.043 inches. Check for oil contamination in plug wells causing coil boot tracking.
