Slow, lazy switching between approximately 0.6-0.9V with much lower frequency than upstream sensor, indicating functional catalytic converter
Known-Good Waveform
In closed loop operation with a healthy catalytic converter, downstream sensor should show slow, minimal activity staying mostly between 0.65-0.85V with occasional lazy transitions. Frequency should be much lower than upstream sensor (less than 1 switch per 2-3 seconds). Signal should be relatively flat compared to upstream sensor's activity, indicating the cat is buffering oxygen content.
Common Failure Patterns
Downstream sensor mirrors upstream sensor activity with rapid switching
Cause: Failed or degraded catalytic converter not storing oxygen properly
Sensor stuck at constant voltage around 0.45V with no movement
Cause: Failed sensor element or poor sensor heater function preventing proper operation
Diagnostic Tips
Compare upstream and downstream sensors on dual-trace scope - downstream should be much flatter and slower if catalyst is healthy. The 3.6L Wrangler cats can fail prematurely due to off-road use causing physical damage. Always inspect for exhaust leaks before condemning sensors as false air can skew readings.
