At Higher RPM
0.1V to 0.9V
Expected Pattern
Wideband air/fuel ratio sensor with relatively stable voltage around stoichiometric (14.7:1 AFR), minimal switching compared to narrowband sensors
Known-Good Waveform
At idle in closed loop, signal should remain relatively stable between 2.7-3.3V (when measuring the actual sensor output, not PCM processed signal), representing stoichiometric mixture. During fuel trim corrections, small smooth variations occur. During rapid throttle changes, sensor should respond quickly within 100-200ms showing rich excursions during acceleration and lean during deceleration.
Common Failure Patterns
Sensor voltage stuck lean (high voltage) or rich (low voltage) with no response to throttle changes
Cause: Contaminated or poisoned sensor element from coolant, oil, or silicone contamination
Slow response time, sluggish transitions taking over 500ms
Cause: Aged sensor element or insufficient heater operation causing low sensor temperature
Diagnostic Tips
The 3.6L uses wideband A/F sensors that provide precise mixture data, not traditional switching narrowband sensors. Monitor heater circuit current draw (should be 6-8 amps when cold) and verify sensor reaches operating temp within 20-30 seconds. These sensors are sensitive to oil consumption issues common on early 3.6L engines.
