Expected Pattern
Digital square wave switching between 0V and approximately 5V. 8 pulses per driveshaft revolution, frequency proportional to vehicle speed
Known-Good Waveform
Clean digital square wave with sharp rising and falling edges between 0V and 5V. At 30 mph, expect approximately 60-70 Hz depending on final drive ratio and tire size. Signal frequency should increase smoothly and proportionally with vehicle speed without dropouts or missing pulses.
Common Failure Patterns
No signal output, flat line at 0V or 5V
Cause: Failed VSS, open or shorted circuit, corroded connector at sensor or PCM
Intermittent signal with random dropouts or erratic frequency not matching actual speed
Cause: Damaged tone ring on output shaft, excessive endplay in output shaft bearing, loose sensor mounting
Weak amplitude or rounded waveform edges instead of crisp square wave
Cause: Sensor failing internally, high resistance in wiring or connections, or excessive air gap to tone ring

Diagnostic Tips
On 2012-2018 JK Wranglers, speedometer and VSS accuracy is affected by tire size changes. PCM stores tire circumference parameters that may need reprogramming after lift/tire modifications. VSS connector is exposed to road splash and commonly corrodes - clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.
