Waveform Type
dc-square
Location
Left cylinder head rear (Bank 1) and right cylinder head rear (Bank 2), mounted in valve cover area reading camshaft tone wheel
Pins
3-pin connector
Idle Frequency
16.7 Hz
Timebase
50ms/div
Voltage Scale
2V/div

Wiring

Orange (5V reference), Gray/Black or Tan/Yellow (sensor signal depending on bank), Black (ground)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.2V to 5V
At Higher RPM
0.1V to 5V

Expected Pattern

Square wave pattern with varying pulse widths corresponding to cam position identification slots, runs at half crankshaft speed

Known-Good Waveform

Digital square wave switching between 0.2V and 5.0V at approximately half the frequency of crankshaft sensor (around 16-18 Hz at idle). Pattern shows distinct pulse width variations used for cylinder identification. Transitions should be clean and vertical with no noise.

Common Failure Patterns

Loss of signal or intermittent dropouts, especially when engine is hot
Cause: Heat-related failure of Hall-effect sensor element, common on high-mileage 3.6L engines
Related DTCs: P0340, P0344, P0365, P0369
Timing correlation errors between cam and crank sensors
Cause: Timing chain stretch or jumped timing chain, common issue on 2012-2013 model years
Related DTCs: P0016, P0017
Weak or inconsistent signal amplitude, not reaching full 5V
Cause: Corroded connector terminals or oil contamination on sensor tip
Related DTCs: P0340, P0365

Diagnostic Tips

The 3.6L Pentastar had timing chain stretch issues on early production years causing correlation codes. Always verify cam-to-crank timing relationship with dual-trace scope before replacing sensors. Clean oil residue from sensor tip as VVT oil spray can coat sensors.
