2019 Jeep Wrangler Β· 3.6L V6
Sensor Type
thermistor
Waveform Type
dc-variable
Location
Integrated into air intake tube between air filter box and throttle body, driver side of engine bay
Pins
4-pin connector
Timebase
1s/div
Voltage Scale
1V/div
Trigger
N/A - DC signal
Wiring
Black (ground), Violet/White (12V power from PCM), Gray/Red (IAT signal), Dark Green/Red (MAF signal to PCM)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0.7V to 1.2V
At Higher RPM
3.5V to 4.8V
Expected Pattern
Smooth analog DC voltage signal that increases linearly with airflow, 0.7-1.2V at idle (5-10 g/s), rising to 3.5-4.8V at WOT (150-200 g/s)
Known-Good Waveform
The hot-wire MAF sensor should produce a very smooth, stable DC voltage at idle between 0.7-1.2V representing 5-10 grams/second airflow. Signal should respond immediately and smoothly to throttle input without steps, spikes, or dropouts. During snap throttle opening, voltage should rise smoothly and proportionally, reaching 3.5-4.8V at wide-open throttle depending on atmospheric conditions and engine load.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage reading consistently high at idle (1.5-2.0V) or low (0.3-0.5V) with poor throttle response and fuel trim compensation
Cause: Contaminated MAF sensing element from oil from aftermarket high-flow air filters or dust intrusion, extremely common on Wranglers with modified intake systems
Erratic voltage with sudden spikes or drops, unstable idle, hesitation during acceleration
Cause: Damaged MAF sensing wire, crack in MAF housing allowing turbulent air bypass, or loose/corroded connector
Diagnostic Tips
Never use carburetor cleaner or contact cleaner on MAF sensor - use only MAF-specific cleaner. Check for aftermarket intake modifications and oiled air filters which are the leading cause of MAF failure on Wranglers. Monitor fuel trims - if LTFT exceeds Β±10% with MAF voltage in normal range, suspect vacuum leaks or injector issues rather than MAF.
