Intake Air Temperature Sensor
2019 Jeep Wrangler Β· 3.6L V6
Sensor Type
thermistor
Waveform Type
dc-variable
Location
Integrated into the Mass Airflow Sensor housing on the intake tube between air filter and throttle body
Pins
2-pin connector
Timebase
1s/div for monitoring temperature changes
Voltage Scale
1V/div
Trigger
Not applicable for DC signal
Wiring
Violet/White (signal) and Black/Light Blue (sensor ground) - part of MAF connector
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
1.5V to 3.5V
At Higher RPM
1.2V to 2.8V
Expected Pattern
Steady DC voltage that decreases as intake air temperature increases, NTC thermistor with 5V reference
Known-Good Waveform
At ambient temperature (68Β°F), expect 2.5-3.2V. Under hood heat soak or high intake temps (150Β°F+), expect 1.2-1.8V. Signal should track ambient air temperature and may rise slightly during extended idle due to underhood heat. Should respond quickly to airflow changes.
Common Failure Patterns
Fixed voltage at 4.9-5.0V
Cause: Open circuit in IAT sensor element or wiring harness break
Diagnostic Tips
IAT is integrated with MAF on JL Wranglers - clean with proper MAF cleaner, never touch the element. Compare IAT reading to ECT at cold start; they should be within 5-10Β°F. Oil contamination from over-oiled aftermarket air filters is a common cause of failure.
