Vehicle Speed Sensor
2019 Jeep Wrangler Β· 3.6L V6
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
dc-square
Location
Calculated/derived signal from ABS wheel speed sensors via CAN bus - no dedicated VSS on 2018+ JL Wrangler with electronic transmission control
Pins
Unknown
Timebase
10ms/div at moderate speeds
Voltage Scale
2V/div if monitoring transmission output speed sensor
Trigger
2.5V, rising edge
Wiring
Not applicable - VSS data is transmitted digitally via CAN C bus from ABS module to PCM
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0V to 5V
At Higher RPM
0V to 5V
Expected Pattern
Digital square wave signal on CAN bus message, not a traditional analog VSS. If monitoring output speed sensor in transmission, expect hall-effect square wave
Known-Good Waveform
The JL Wrangler does not use a traditional VSS - vehicle speed is calculated from ABS wheel speed sensors. If diagnosing transmission output speed sensor (for transmission control), expect clean square wave 0-5V pattern that increases in frequency with vehicle speed, similar to wheel speed sensors.
Common Failure Patterns
Speedometer inoperative or erratic, transmission shift issues
Cause: Failed ABS wheel speed sensor(s), CAN bus communication error, or faulty transmission output speed sensor
No output speed signal from transmission sensor
Cause: Failed transmission output speed sensor or damaged wiring harness
Diagnostic Tips
Use a bi-directional scan tool to monitor calculated vehicle speed versus individual wheel speeds to identify discrepancies. Check CAN C bus (pins 6 and 14 on DLC) for proper 2.5V bias and communication. For transmission issues, verify output speed sensor in transmission tail housing shows proper signal.
