Expected Pattern
34-2 tooth pattern with two consecutive missing teeth creating a reference gap, AC sine wave that increases in amplitude and frequency with RPM
Known-Good Waveform
Smooth AC sine wave with consistent amplitude across all teeth except for the distinctive double-width gap where two teeth are missing (reference point). At idle (approximately 700 RPM), expect 32 normal teeth producing peaks around ±1.2V followed by the reference gap showing a longer period between zero crossings. The waveform should be symmetrical above and below zero volts with no DC offset.
Common Failure Patterns
Erratic amplitude with some peaks significantly lower than others, inconsistent voltage swings
Cause: Worn or damaged reluctor wheel teeth, metal debris buildup on sensor tip, excessive air gap due to sensor backing out
Weak signal overall with amplitude less than 0.5V at idle or less than 3V at high RPM
Cause: Sensor coil degradation, increased air gap, sensor mounting loose or pushed back

Diagnostic Tips
Check air gap specification (0.5-1.4mm typical) as this VR sensor is sensitive to distance from reluctor wheel. Metal shavings from timing chain wear can accumulate on the magnetic sensor tip causing erratic signals - inspect sensor tip for debris during diagnosis.
