Ignition Coil Primary
2017 Toyota Camry Β· 2.5L I4
Sensor Type
inductive
Waveform Type
pulse-width
Location
Individual coil-on-plug units mounted directly on each spark plug, valve cover top
Pins
2-pin connector
Idle Frequency
20 Hz
Timebase
10ms/div
Voltage Scale
5V/div for primary side measurement
Trigger
12V, falling edge
Wiring
IGT signal wire (gray/black stripe), Power supply (pink/black stripe) from ignition relay
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0V to 14V
At Higher RPM
0V to 14V
Expected Pattern
Sharp voltage drop to near 0V during dwell, then spike to 200-350V during coil collapse, followed by oscillations settling to battery voltage
Known-Good Waveform
Primary waveform shows clean dwell time of 2-3ms at idle with battery voltage held steady, then sharp drop when coil fires. Current limiting should show flat dwell period at constant voltage. Coil spike during collapse should reach 200-350V with 3-5 clean oscillations decaying back to battery voltage within 1-2ms.
Common Failure Patterns
Reduced or absent voltage spike, weak oscillations after coil collapse
Cause: Failing ignition coil with shorted primary windings or weak insulation breakdown
Diagnostic Tips
2AR-FE engine uses individual IGT control signals from ECM. Compare all four coil primary patterns simultaneously to identify weak coils. Connector corrosion at coil harness is common after 100k miles.
